What is Vitamin K

The body needs vitamin K primarily to produce certain proteins. These are mainly proteins that are important for blood clotting. In combination with protein, calcium and vitamin D, vitamin K can counteract bone loss and thus protect against osteoporosis.

What is Vitamin K

The body needs vitamin K primarily to produce certain proteins. These are mainly proteins that are important for blood clotting. In combination with protein, calcium and vitamin D, vitamin K can counteract bone loss and thus protect against osteoporosis. Vitamin K also supports bone formation. The two K vitamins perform different functions: vitamin K1 controls the processes involved in blood clotting, while vitamin K2 is important for calcium metabolism. Other functions of the vitamin:

  • improves bone density and strength
  • prevents hemorrhagic diseases in infants
  • reduces bruising after laser procedures
  • lowers the risk of hip fractures
  • improves glucose tolerance
  • prevents excessive anticoagulant activity
  • regulates calcium levels in the blood
  • prevents limescale deposits

Causes

Vitamin K deficiency is rarely caused by malnutrition. In most cases, vitamin formation in the intestine is disturbed. This can be the result of drug treatments with antibiotics, for example. In addition, severe inflammation of the intestinal tract causes certain deficiency symptoms. If the outflow or the production of bile is impaired, vitamin K is no longer sufficiently utilized by the organism.
