Vaccines are biological medicinal products, the manufacture of which is subject to strict hygiene measures and controls. The vaccines
must be approved by the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), the Federal Office for Sera and Vaccines in Langen. The institute also checks the
effectiveness of the vaccines at fixed intervals. A distinction is made between the following vaccines:

Inactivated vaccines are killed pathogens or antigens processed by chemical and physical means. They cannot reproduce. As a result, no vaccine infection is possible, so that inactivated vaccines can also be used in patients with immune deficiencies. The vaccination protection decreases after some time, the vaccination protection must then be refreshed by a new vaccination. Killed vaccines are used for whooping cough, influenza, cholera, typhus, rabies, dysentery, pneumococcal infections,
and meningococcal infections.

Non-cellular vaccines consist of fragments of a pathogen. The immune system can form antibodies with a characteristic feature of a pathogen. The vaccine itself cannot cause disease and is used, for example, to treat whooping cough.

Recombinant vaccine: A single distinctive feature (antigen) from the surface of a pathogen may be sufficient to activate the immune system and protect the organism from the pathogen. If its genetic blueprint is known, the trait can be artificially produced in the laboratory. It is then incorporated into bacteria or yeast cells, for example. A vaccine can be made from it using certain preparation methods. Since the pathogen is no longer complete in this antigen, no disease is caused by the vaccine. Recombinant vaccines are used to vaccinate against hepatitis A and B and cholera.

Conjugated vaccines are artificially produced from different isolated characteristics of a pathogen. A conjugate vaccine is used, for example, against Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) and meningococcal type C. Without vaccination measures, Hib is one of the most dangerous bacterial pathogens in childhood. Meningitis (inflammation of the meninges) and epiglottitis (inflammation of the epiglottis) are the most feared clinical pictures.

Combination vaccines consist of vaccines against up to six diseases. They are just as effective and tolerable as individual vaccines, but save multiple injections. Triple vaccinations are measles, mumps and rubella, as well as diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus (lockjaw). As a quadruple vaccination, it is also possible to vaccinate against Haemophilus influenzae type B. A six-fold vaccine is available against poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), Haemophilus influenzae type B infections and hepatitis B.
