As different as a person’s face is, so is the variety of appearance in the intimate area. Changes in the labia are usually caused by various factors:
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Tissue weakness
- Genetic influences
- Age related
- Birth and previous operations
Discomfort in the intimate area
Although the causes are very diverse, there is a limited number of complaints that lead patients to my practice:
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pain during physical activity (cycling, horseback riding, etc.)
- Pain when wearing tight clothing
- Chronic bacterial infections of the vagina
- Psychological barrier through the appearance of the intimate area during sexual intercourse
Labia correction – obsession with beauty or a serious problem?
In my role as a gynecologist, corrections to the labia are one of the more and more popular surgeries in the intimate area. Until a few years ago, medical reasons with functional complaints were the main reasons for reducing the labia minora, but aesthetic reasons are playing an increasingly important role.
In my opinion, the cause is not the boundless obsession with beauty of modern women cited by various media, but a simple thing: the trend towards intimate shaving. Unfortunately, this sharpened the view of something more than some women would like. The ideal image of the closed shell of the female genitals, with the full outer labia tightly enclosing the inner labia, is far from being fulfilled. The result: shame, self-insecurity, frustration or even psychological impairments. What seems completely absurd and pointless to some becomes a serious problem for those affected.
The function of the inner labia
In principle, the labia have the task of closing the vagina to the outside. This is said to protect the vagina from a number of risks:
- The penetration of germs
- Inwanted foreign objects
- Dehydration
Objective of labiaplasty
In the field of labiaplasty , there are generally two goals:
- Medical Goals
- Aesthetic goals
From a medical point of view, a labiaplasty should guarantee that the patient is free of symptoms.
The aim of an aesthetic correction is to restore the ideal image of the closed turbinate. Changes can be made to both the outer and inner labia.
