Early diagnosis and diagnosis of children with special needs is a necessity that has proven its importance today. The earlier the child’s problem is identified, the earlier he or she can be placed in the type of education program that suits their needs. It is known that education that starts in the early period accelerates the general development of children with special needs and increases their cognitive, social and language skills. Thus, with a programmed and systematic support given in the first years of life, all capacities of children can be revealed and the necessary infrastructure for basic education is prepared.
Early Intervention and Its Importance
Early intervention includes increasing the competence of the child by providing teaching and learning experiences, improving the existing problem by providing treatment services, preventing deficiencies and providing educational equipment support if necessary. Early intervention aims not to eliminate existing damage, but to use existing functions and prevent further loss.
How is the need for special education determined?
Special education need; medical diagnosis and evaluation is determined by making developmental and educational evaluations. Universities in Child Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, Child Neurology, Developmental Pediatrics etc. Special education needs are decided by making developmental and educational evaluations by specialist physicians, psychologists, and developmental specialists in their departments and clinics. In addition, families can apply for early diagnosis and referral to the special education services department established for this purpose within the guidance and research centers in the provinces/districts they are in and benefit from the necessary service. After the child’s disability is determined through early diagnosis and diagnosis, it should be tried to close the gap in parallel with his normal development by supporting his/her education and development areas through appropriate programs.
A newborn’s disability may not be detected at first glance and with routine tests. In this sense, most of the work falls on the parents. When a
situation is observed in the language, movement, mental, social and emotional development of the child compared to their peers, they should immediately apply to the relevant departments of universities, experts and institutions. A child who receives early childhood education has a more productive and successful school and education life than a disabled child who does not. Independent living skills develop effectively, quality of life is high.
