What is a skin tumor

The skin is divided into epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat layer. The dermis contains skin appendages such as sweat glands and hair follicles, and the subcutaneous fat layer is composed of fat cells, and nerves and blood vessels pass through. A condition in which cells contained in each layer of the skin are abnormally overgrowth is called a skin tumor. It is common to appear in the form of a lump or nevi.

Skin tumors are divided into benign and malignant tumors. Benign tumors are tumors that do not invade surrounding tissues or metastasize to other sites. Malignant tumors are called ‘skin cancer’ and can invade surrounding tissues, damage normal tissues, and metastasize to other sites.

Although the cause of most benign skin tumors is unknown, it is known that they are related to genetic factors such as family history or external factors such as ultraviolet rays. On the other hand, skin cancer (skin malignancy) is the main cause of damage caused by sunlight. In addition, arsenic, a chemical, is associated with skin cancer, and viral infection can also cause skin cancer. On the other hand, there are reports that skin cancer is more common in immunosuppressed patients, such as organ transplant patients or AIDS patients.

Professor Kim Seong-eun said, “If there is an abnormality on the body, the color of the original dot changes or grows, there is a lump that is palpable in the skin, when the skin breaks down and oozes out for no reason, and the wound bleeds and does not stop “You need to visit a hospital for treatment,” he explained.

What is the treatment and prevention of skin tumors?

Treatment methods for benign tumors include curettage, electrocautery, cryotherapy, laser therapy, and dermabrasion. Surgical removal is recommended if it is large in size, is located in a region that compresses surrounding tissues, or if differential diagnosis from skin cancer is required.

Malignant tumors must be surgically removed first. You can try photodynamic therapy, sofa and electrocautery, and cryotherapy. Depending on the metastasis and the site of occurrence, radiation therapy or cytotoxic drug therapy may be required. Because malignant tumors require extensive resection, a large defect remains after surgery. In this case, skin grafting, local flap using the surrounding skin, and furthermore, if the (defect site) is very large, a glass flap grafting a distant flap should be performed.
