What is a facelift?

The term lifting refers to all operations intended to correct the sagging of the skin. The face over time will become more elongated with a sag in the cheekbones and the creation of a hollow in the middle of the cheek. The loss of the oval of the face, the appearance of jowls, the deepening of the nasolabial expression furrows will manifest themselves. There is no soft facelift, no hard facelift, the whole thing is to adapt the region to be tightened according to the objectives that have been determined beforehand with the patient.

We can thus associate more or less the complete lifting of the temporal region pulling on the corner of the eye and the cheekbone, cervico-facial lifting treating the jowls and the neck. This is a rejuvenation operation for which there is no fixed age since we do not all age in the same way, but it is rare to consider it before the age of 40. . This is to be differentiated from morphological transformation facelifts (mask-lift) which modify the axis of the eyes and the shape of the cheekbones. The forehead lift enhances the skin and muscles of the forehead.

Facelifts can be associated with liposuction gestures in the neck region when there is excess fat or conversely with fat fillings in the nasolabial folds of the cheeks and lower eyelids to restore volume then that with age the skin at the level of its epidermis and its dermis and its muscles has become thinner.

Who is a good candidate for facelift?

Several factors will come into play: the condition of the skin, the type of the face, the objectives, the re-tensioning of the skin according to certain orientations will allow, in front of a mirror, to simulate the expected results. They will clearly show that they do not cause any modification on the middle part of the face, in particular on the upper lip and the middle part of the forehead.

How is a facelift performed?

The intervention takes place either under local anesthesia with deep sedation giving deep relaxation, or under general anesthesia in the presence of an anesthesiologist.

The incision starts in the temple under the hairline then goes in front of the ear, then in the ear, then in front of the lobe of the ear, then behind the ear to end in the nape of the neck. The planes that will be tightened are not only cutaneous but also the deep muscle and fat planes.

The intervention lasts 2 to 3 hours. The incisions are placed in such a way that they are as discreet as possible and that the implantation of the hair is not modified, in particular the leg.

What is the recovery time?

Hospitalization lasts 24 to 48 hours. But it seems difficult to recover a social and professional activity before 3 weeks.

During the 8 to 10 days following the intervention, the face is swollen, even deformed by variable bruises depending on the patient. The sutures are removed between the 7th and 15th day. The skin is cardboard, insensitive the first month.

What are the risks, complications, side effects?

Like any surgery the facelift can be subject to all the usual problems that come with surgery. The most common after a facelift is the occurrence of a hematoma (2 to 8%) and which in 0.5% of cases must be evacuated by the surgeon. The infection is extremely rare and would be treated with antibiotics. Healing difficulties can occur especially in heavy smokers. This is why the surgeon will recommend that you stop smoking 4 to 6 weeks before the operation.
