What happens after an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

Abdominoplasty has become, over the years, a very common cosmetic surgery operation. It is not uncommon for women to use it, especially after several pregnancies. Update on an effective intervention that elicits clear and precise answers, in particular during the postoperative period.

An abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery operation of the belly (abdominal wall). This fairly practical and effective intervention makes it possible to find a flat stomach, especially after several pregnancies, a lack of physical activity or any reason justifying it. Performed under general anesthesia, this intervention requires a hospital stay of 24 to 48 hours depending on the case. Following this operation, the pain remains variable depending on the gesture and the nature of the intervention. Indeed, when the abdominoplasty does not aim to put the muscles back in tension (dermolipectomy alone with liposuction of the belly), the pain is almost absent. Conversely, they are soothed with the help of appropriate analgesics for the first few days.

However, precautions are necessary. So plan dressings for 8 to 10 days, as well as wearing an abdominal compression sheath between 3 to 6 weeks depending on the case. One to three weeks of work stoppage (depending on the type of profession) are necessary to facilitate a good convalescence and avoid any physical effort (for example, straining the abdominal muscles, especially if they have been treated). The resumption of a sporting activity can only be envisaged one month after the abdominoplasty, in a progressive manner…

Steps to remember:

Another little advice: sunny weather, do not expose the scar to UV rays for a period of 6 months. Otherwise, you must apply a total sunscreen index 50. This scar will fade gradually to reach maturity about a year after the abdominoplasty.

The result of this abdominoplasty is immediately visible at the level of the silhouette. But you will have to wait one to two months for the edema to subside to take full advantage of the new curves, and a year to see the final result (final shape and scarring maturity).

On a physical level, do not make efforts likely to trigger pain or tire you. Ask for help, don’t be alone. Do not hesitate to walk a minimum, to promote circulation.

In rare cases, small localized imperfections can be observed that can be easily corrected (local anesthesia): the scar may be too visible. Small excesses of skin or fat appear, and an increase in pubic hair can be observed…

Although they remain quite rare, complications are possible. Hence the need to choose a competent and qualified plastic surgeon, recognized by the Order of Physicians, who will know how to reduce these risks as much as possible and perfectly treat any possible complication.
