What are the types of rhinoplasty?
There are five types of rhinoplasty: aesthetic, functional, ethnic, secondary and post-traumatic or reconstructive. From the two main types (aesthetic and functional) there are subtypes, which vary according to the techniques used.
1.Aesthetic Rhinoplasty
The aesthetic rhinoplasty is carried out by plastic surgeons with the aim of improving the shape and size of the nose in order to harmonize it with the face. It is important to note that this type of surgery should be performed only by trained professionals because it is an extremely delicate procedure.
2.Functional Rhinoplasty
When we talk about functional rhinoplasty we are referring to plastic surgery that is performed with a view to improve nasal breathing difficulties due to certain abnormalities such as deviation of septum (deviation of cartilage or bone that separates both nasal cavities). The operation promotes better air flow through the nostrils.
3.Ethnic rhinoplasty consists of a surgical procedure in which the aim is to modify ethnic characteristics such as a pointed nose or low nasal bridge;
4.Secondary rhinoplasty is performed when there is a need to correct an aesthetic result of a previous surgery;
5.Post-traumatic or reconstructive rhinoplasty can be required when there is any trauma that causes deformation in the nose.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can also be called a nose job. It is done to correct the appearance of the nose, as well as its functionality. Rhinoplasty can be aesthetic or functional.
The aesthetic rhinoplasty is indicated to correct deformities of the nose and balance it with the other facial features. It can be combined with other procedures such as facelift to give a more harmonious look to the face.
The functional rhinoplasty aims to correct the breathing difficulties caused by obstruction in the nasal passages due to anatomical problems, such as deviation of the septum, hypertrophy of conchae or spongy meat, among others; or due to defects caused by trauma or infection that affect the function of the nose.
