Facelift

The necklift is what most people talk about when they are talking about a lifting operation. There are many lifting techniques: SMAS plication, platysma plication, cervico-facial lift, SMAS flap, deep plane cervico-facial lift and composite cervico-facial lift. The use of threads (silhouette threads) in addition to surgical lifting has revolutionized facial rejuvenation surgery by allowing very natural results without large incisions and swelling associated with traditional lifting operations.

The principle is based on removing excess skin (with or without fat grafting), tightening and repositioning facial ligaments by means of an incision at hair level around the ears, stretching and fixing. These actions will redistribute fat tissue towards areas affected by volume loss (cheekbones) and resuspend it in descending areas (jowls) to regain a youthful oval face.

The technique used may involve incisions only behind or inside the ear or additional incisions in front of the ear or at hairline level. The duration of surgery depends on many factors: type and location of incisions, duration of anaesthesia, type and depth of dissection, etc…

The indications for a facelift are numerous:

  • Face too long
  • Sagging skin on cheeks
  • Excess skin on neck (cervical ptosis)
  • Nasolabial folds too deep and marked
  • Cheeks hollowed out = lost volume
  • Removal of jowls = loss of oval face
  • Loss of definition at cheekbones level (malar eminence)

Face lift operation prevents the appearance of wrinkles on the face and neck, enhances the chin line, repairs sagging cheeks and restores facial contours.

The face lift operation is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. It may take between 2 and 3 hours.

Long does it take to recover?

Recovery period depends on your condition and the type of surgery you have undergone. It takes around 2 weeks to 1 month to recover from this surgery. If you have undergone a deep plane facelift, then it may take more than a month to recover. After the surgery, you need to take rest for 3-5 days. You will be able to get back to your normal activities within 10 days but you need some more time for final recovery.

What are the risks associated with facelift surgery?

As with any other type of surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications involved with getting a facelift. Some of these risks include:

  • Bad reaction to anesthesia
  • Bleeding under the skin
  • Infection
  • Numbness in areas where tissue has been manipulated or removed
  • Poor healing of incisions resulting in visible scar

There are two types of facelift:

  • A classic facelift which includes an incision around the ear and another along its edge in order to pull back on a large flap and give more prominence to features such as cheekbones and cheeks without changing their basic shape.
  • A partial facelift is only used to correct sagging at certain points on the face.

The first thing that must be done before any procedure is to meet with your doctor who will discuss all aspects of your intervention:

  • What are your expectations?
  • How do you want your postoperative result to look like?
  • What are your fears?
  • Which techniques are available for you?

It is thanks to this interview that it will be decided which areas should be retightened and what incisions should be made.
