How is a rhinoplasty performed?
Nose plastic surgery can be performed using two methods, which are called closed rhinoplasty (endonasal) and open rhinoplasty (exorhinoplasty). The most appropriate method is chosen by the plastic surgeon according to the corrections that must be made in the structure of the nose and this will depend on each case.
Closed rhinoplasty
In the endonasal method, the surgeon makes only small incisions inside the nostrils – in which the skin of the nose will not be exposed – gaining access to the cartilage and bone of the structure. Through this method, the surgeon performs the remodeling of the nose, removing tissue, cartilage and bone, making it possible to:
- Change the size of the nose;
- Correct breathing problems;
- Modify nostril width;
- Change the shape of the tip of the nose;
- Correct nasal damage or birth defect;
- Modify angle between upper lip and nose.
The endonasal method is a little faster than open surgery, it can last around an hour and allows the patient to be discharged on the same day of the operation. The result of this surgery is more natural compared to the exorhinoplasty method, and results in a less apparent scar.
Open rhinoplasty
Nasal exorhinoplasty is the method used when there is a need to make many changes in the nose, making it possible to correct, change and modify the same imperfections as in the endonasal method. In this type of procedure, the surgeon makes incisions that allow the skin to be lifted from the cartilage and bone of the nose, allowing him to see the entire nasal structure with greater clarity.
To close the incisions, the surgeon can use splints, bandages or steri-strips, which provide greater support and stability to the structure, also helping with tissue healing. Because it is a more complex method, exorhinoplasty can take about two hours.
Combining any rhinoplasty methods with other functional surgery, the patient will need to be hospitalized for a period of between 12 hours to a day. Anesthesia for a rhinoplasty can be of two types: general anesthesia or intravenous sedation along with local anesthesia.
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty
One of the most modern techniques in plastic nose surgery is ultrasonic rhinoplasty. This methodology allows the plastic surgeon to perform the intervention without breaking the nasal bone. Simply put, it is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time, in addition to satisfactory results.
Postoperative recovery
After the procedure, the patient may experience bruising and swelling in the operated region, in addition to pain and discomfort. However, these symptoms are common, and can be relieved with the use of medications prescribed by the surgeon.
The patient must maintain complete rest for the first seven days — a period in which it is recommended to consume only soft foods —, in addition to moderate rest for the following seven days. After these two weeks, the patient can return to activities that are part of their routine. However, physical exertion should be avoided for at least two months.
After the first week, the incisions begin the healing process. After 30 days of the surgery, the patient can start to see the results of the rhinoplasty, but it takes at least a year for the new nasal contour to be redefined. Over this time, the structure may undergo gradual changes in its appearance.
