Hair and follicles
Hair is made in places called hair follicles. Hair follicles periodically go through active-quiescent phases. The temporal interval of these hair cycles varies depending on the body part. In the case of hair, it goes through a growth phase (growth phase) of about 26 years and a regression phase of 2 to 4 weeks before entering a resting period (resting phase) of about 3 to 4 months. Each hair follicle undergoes 10 to 20 hair follicle growth cycles in its lifetime.

A normal person has about 100,000 hairs. It grows an average of 0.37mm per day, and about 1cm per month. In general, 85-90% of hair is grown in the growth phase, and the number of hair follicles in the growth phase decreases with age. Therefore, 10 to 15% of hair follicles are in the catagen or resting phase, and an average of 50 to 60 hairs are lost per day. This amount of hair loss is normal. However, if you lose more than 100 hairs per day, you should suspect alopecia.
Baldness refers to androgenetic alopecia. Genetic factors and male hormones act as the cause. In androgenetic alopecia, the growth period of hair follicles during the anagen phase is shortened, and the ratio of the number of follicles in the resting state to the number of follicles in the anagen phase decreases, resulting in the shrinkage of the hair follicles over time (miniaturization of hair follicle).
Testosterone, a male hormone, is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5a-reductase, which induces hair follicle changes. People who have baldness in their household, especially if both parents are bald, are very likely to pass it on to their children. These people lose their hair earlier than others.
In the case of Koreans, the proportion of men with male pattern hair loss is 2.3% in their 20s, 4.0% in their 30s, 10.5% in their 40s, 24.5% in their 50s, 34.3% in their 60s, and 46.9% in their 70s. After the age of 40, the frequency of baldness increases sharply. At first, hair begins to fall out from both sides of the frontal area and the top of the head in the late 20’s or 30’s. As the forehead widens, the hair loss is magnified.
There is a difference in degree depending on the individual, but usually the side hair and the back hair remain. In the area where the hair falls out, thin and weak hairs appear at first, and eventually the hairs disappear. Baldness can also occur in women. Hair loss in women usually starts late, falls out at the top of the head, and the degree of hair loss is weaker than in men.
