What is abdominoplasty?

After a pregnancy or a large weight loss, it is difficult to return to a flat stomach naturally. Physical activity, strict diets, creams and slimming products are not always enough solutions, and this can lead to patient dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. In those cases in which the efforts made are not enough, abdominoplasty is the only solution. According to ISAPS data, flat abdomen surgery is among the 5 most requested surgeries and the number of operations performed increases year after year.

Candidates for surgery

In general, patients who are interested in having this procedure are advised to try to get to their ideal weight for better results and a better post-operative process. Women who are looking for a pregnancy in the short term should have this surgery later so as not to affect the results with the dilation of the skin and muscles.

Patients suffering from metabolic, cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases may incur greater risks, so in these cases it is advisable to consult a specialist and follow their recommendations.

What is the reduction of the abdomen for?

The goal of abdominoplasty, experts explain, is to remove excess skin and excess fat in the abdomen and pubic area, whether it be “flap” skin, skin with stretch marks, or scar tissue (for example, in the case of caesarean section).

This surgical procedure can usually be combined with liposuction of the abdomen and waist and with other interventions such as breast augmentation or lift surgery, as in the “Mommy Makeover”.

How is the first consultation with the surgeon?

In the first consultation, the surgeon needs to know the complete clinical history of the patient and perform an in-depth examination that takes into account the morphological parameters, the characteristics of the skin, the state of the muscles of the abdominal area and the volume of skin and fat that it will be eliminated. The surgery is planned in a personalized way according to these parameters, in the same way the needs and wishes of the patient will be taken into account.

After the evaluation, the surgeon will explain to the patient the results that can be obtained and all the details about the operation and the postoperative period. Among other things, he will discuss the most appropriate technique for your case, possible risks and complications, and how to prepare for surgery. He can also show you some examples of other patients.

During this visit, it is necessary to ask everything about the surgery, remove all doubts to establish a relationship of trust with the professional.

What can be improved with flat abdomen surgery?

Surgery allows treating three main aspects of the abdomen:

  • The skin: the removal of excess skin, or the so-called abdominal apron, which can be due to excessive weight loss (including after bariatric surgery) or after pregnancy.
  • The fat: the removal of fat deposits around the abdominal wall, but also from other areas of the body through a combination of liposuction and abdominoplasty.
  • The muscle: strengthens the muscles to stretch the abdominal region and corrects their separation. This separation is known as diastasis abdominis, often caused by pregnancy.

What are the different types of abdominoplasty?

In the classic abdominoplasty, the excess skin between the pubic bone and the umbilicus is removed. The surgery is performed with spinal anesthesia plus sedation or general if the patient’s conditions require it. The intervention lasts around two or three hours, varying depending on the type of dermolipectomy to be performed, it is usually discharged in one day, but it may also require a day of hospitalization.

The main incision is located in the pubic region and is extended laterally, trying to locate it below the area covered by the swimsuit. In addition, a second incision is made around the navel, this allows the removal of all the skin and fat below it; If there are stretch marks in that area, they will be removed during surgery. With this technique, more natural results are obtained since it preserves the patient’s navel with its normal shape and location.

During this procedure, the muscles of the abdominal wall are reconstructed, restoring their location and tension. Usually, a liposuction of the sides and hips is performed, remodeling the body contour. The “belly” or prominent abdomen can be treated with Liposculpture if there is no excess skin (flap), achieving very good results.

There are two other types of tummy tuck surgery that are used in cases other than those contemplated by classic tummy tuck surgery. These are:

Mini Abdominoplasty

It is performed in cases where flaccidity and excess skin are found only in the abdominal area below the navel, the area above the navel being without flaccidity.

  • The scar is a little shorter than that of the classic abdominoplasty
Circular or circumferential abdominoplasty
  • It is carried out when there is a very large excess of skin, which extends towards the back, such as after bariatric surgery where very important weight drops are made (more than 40-50 kg).
  • A scar is made that also extends to the back to remove excess skin. In this way, the scar will be hidden by the swimsuit, but will cover the entire circumference of the patient, both front and back.
