Suitability
The best candidates for this surgery are both men and women over 18, who are in relatively good physical shape and who have large fat deposits or have drooping and sagging skin on the abdomen. Good mental health is also a condition.
If you have undergone a pregnancy or a large weight loss, the abdominal skin will often become flabby. An abdominal plastic surgery can be a solution here.
For the same reason, women who are planning a pregnancy as well as people who are planning a greater weight loss are advised to wait to have an abdominal plastic surgery done.
Procedures
Abdominal plastic surgery is described as a major plastic surgery operation, and there are several different methods of performing it. For the most part, however, a surgeon will start by making a long incision from the hip bone to the hip bone.
Next, another incision will be made around the navel to free it from surrounding tissue. With “smaller” abdominal plastic surgery, the first incision will not be near as far, and the second incision around the navel will not be a necessity.
Then you remove sagging and excess skin and fat on the abdomen (middle and lower region) and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall, after which the skin is sewn together.
The operation takes 2-5 hours depending on the extent of the procedure. With a “smaller” abdominal plastic surgery, it can take between 1-2 hours.
Sedation
The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and during hospitalization.
Side effects
Temporary pain, swelling, tenderness, numbness of the abdominal skin, bleeding (bruising), feeling of tiredness for several weeks or months.
Risk of complications
Blood collection, infections, bleeding, poor healing results and thereby risk of a new operation.
There is a risk of side effects from anesthesia, infection, bleeding, poor wound healing and poor cosmetic results as well as for blood clots.
No type of surgery is risk-free, but very serious complications occur very rarely.
Healing and recovery
Work can be resumed after 2-4 weeks. As a general rule, the patient should refrain from heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and sports as well as sex for up to 6 weeks. The large scar that is inflicted after the operation will become less visible after approx. 3 months. Sometimes it can take up to 2 years.
Duration of treatment
After an abdominal plastic surgery, the abdomen will retain its appearance for many years, unless you gain weight or e.g. during a pregnancy, the peritoneum gets inflated again.
The operation will leave visible scars, which will, however, most often be covered by the underwear. The scars will become less visible with time.
The surgeon then lifts the skin away from the abdomen wall. They are now able to remove excess fat and skin from that area. The abdominal muscles can also be tightened with stitches running between them at this point in time.
After this has been done, the skin is then stretched down over the newly made abdomen. A new opening for the belly button is cut out and sutures close up all of these cuts. There are usually drains put in place near these cuts as well, which will help to collect any excess fluid that accumulates during recovery time period post-surgery.
