Microneedle plasters against baldness?
For people who are affected by hair loss and balding, this can be very stressful. However, a newly developed microneedle patch could provide a remedy in the future by tackling the main causes of hair loss – oxidative stress and insufficient blood flow.
Role of stress and blood flow in baldness
Researchers at Zhejiang University conducted a study trying to reverse alopecia (hair loss). While there are a number of over-the-counter hair loss treatments out there, most don’t focus on the root causes of alopecia, the research team said. These are oxidative stress and insufficient blood flow.
The research group therefore developed a temporary microneedle patch with cerium nanoparticles that combats oxidative stress and insufficient blood flow and has already resulted in faster hair regrowth in a mouse model than previously possible with previous treatments.
Permanent hair loss due to androgenic alopecia?
The most common form of hair loss is what is known as androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss), which can affect both men and women. Unfortunately, the hair loss in those affected is permanent because the blood vessels surrounding the follicles are not sufficient to deliver nutrients, cytokines and other important molecules, the researchers explain.
Another problem could be an accumulation of reactive oxygen species in the scalp, which triggers the premature death of the cells that normally form and grow new hair.
Nanoparticles containing cerium reduce oxidative stress
The research group had previously found that cerium-containing nanoparticles can mimic enzymes that scavenge excess reactive oxygen species, which reduces oxidative stress in liver injuries, wounds and Alzheimer’s disease.
