Sliding genioplasty surgery

This procedure can be done in a hospital or in an office operating room. Most have general anesthesia for the procedure.

To begin, the surgeon pulls down on the lower lip and cuts the lower lip gum below the lower teeth. The soft tissue is then separated from the chin bone. Your surgeon uses a saw to cut a small vertical line on your chin for reference. This ensures that the bone stays straight when moving forwards or backwards.

The doctor then makes a horizontal cut across the chin bone. If you move your chin back or make it smaller, your doctor also cuts out a piece of bone. They then slide the bone forward or backward and put in screws and possibly a metal plate to make sure it stays in place.

To lengthen the chin, they reattach the bone with a space between the rest of the jaw and the chin. The bone will grow back over time and fill this gap.

To shorten the chin, they remove the wedge of bone and reattach the chin to the rest of the jaw.

If you are moving your chin forward, the surgery may create a “step” in the bone. The steps are much more visible in women than in men due to the lack of facial hair. If you have a step, your surgeon may shave off some of the bone to keep it from showing.

The incision is then sutured. Your doctor then places compression tape on the outside of your mouth and chin to make sure the area is protected during early healing.
