Sliding Genioplasty

During a sliding genioplasty, the surgeon uses a saw to cut the jawbone away from the rest of the jaw.

• They slide the piece of bone forward, backward, or sideways. After the chin is positioned, the surgeon will check the alignment and file the excess bone along the jawline.
• They screw the jawbone and reattach it to the jaw with a metal plate. Some surgeons may use biodegradable plates and screws instead of metal so that a person cannot feel the screws under the skin.
• The surgeon closes the incision. He then places compression bands on the front and sides of the chin to minimize swelling.
