Skin Tumors – 2022
Skin tumors are growths of skin tissue. The term “tumor” says nothing about the danger of the proliferation: There are malignant tumors, which include the various types of skin cancer, and benign tumors, which primarily pose a cosmetic challenge. The symptoms are so diverse that only the dermatologist can make a well-founded diagnosis.

Skin Tumors
Skin tumors are growths of skin tissue. The term “tumor” says nothing about the danger of the proliferation: There are malignant tumors, which include the various types of skin cancer, and benign tumors, which primarily pose a cosmetic challenge. The symptoms are so diverse that only the dermatologist can make a well-founded diagnosis. In the course of skin cancer screening, your skin is carefully examined for suspicious growths. If it is unclear whether a discovered tumor is dangerous or not, a tissue sample provides information. Critical growths are removed as quickly as possible and treated further if necessary.
- Benign tumors
Benign skin tumors do not normally pose a health risk. They usually do not affect the surrounding tissue. However, such benign tumors can be removed for aesthetic reasons. - There are a number of best practices for doing this. Examples of benign skin tumors include:
- Blood sponges (haemangiomas)
- Fibroids
- Lipomas
- Age warts
- Xanthelasma
Malignant tumors: skin cancers
Malignant tumors are also known as skin cancer. Skin cancer is dangerous for a number of reasons and must be treated as soon as possible: The various types of skin cancer almost always cause severe damage to the surrounding tissue. In addition, the cancer cells can spread in the body and trigger cancer growth in other places (so-called metastases).
The most common types of skin cancer are:
- Basal cell cancer (basalioma)
- Squamous cell carcinoma (spinalioma, squamous cell carcinoma)
- Black skin cancer (malignant melanoma)
All types of skin cancer primarily affect skin regions that have been damaged by sunlight for years. Basal cell cancer usually occurs on the face. It is the most common type of cancer of all. Due to its profuse growth, it can affect facial structure and cause disfigurement. However, he almost never spreads his cancer cells to other areas. Such metastases are somewhat more common in squamous cell carcinoma, but are still rare. This skin cancer variant often affects the lips or other areas that are heavily exposed to the sun. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. It can also destroy larger tissue structures. Black skin cancer is the most dangerous
type of skin cancer. It is often life-threatening in the later stages and is responsible for by far the largest number of skin cancer deaths. Black skin cancer can spread its fast-growing cancer cells to the lymph nodes and various internal organs. In many cases, it arises from birthmarks, but it also grows in previously inconspicuous places.
Treatment of skin cancer
If detected early, all types of skin cancer are curable. Regular skin cancer screening is therefore of the utmost importance. If a malignant tumor is discovered, it is usually surgically removed. A part of the surrounding healthy tissue is also included in the procedure to be on the safe side. In the case of black skin cancer, neighboring lymph nodes may also be removed in order to reduce the risk of metastases. Depending on the progress of the cancer growth, chemotherapy or radiation therapy can follow in the case of melanoma. After the treatment of acute skin cancer, follow-up examinations are necessary at regular intervals. In this way, renewed cancer growth can be counteracted
at an early stage.
Prevention
Unprotected skin exposed to sunlight is considered the most important cause of skin cancer. Unprotected stays in the sun should therefore be reduced to a minimum. You should always pay attention to sun protection by means of creams or appropriate clothing. Sunburns should be avoided at all costs – they damage the skin particularly badly.
