Skin Cancer Detection
As soon as you notice any changes in your skin, such as a new spot or a change in an existing spot on your body, you should seek medical help immediately. Skin cancers can be cured by early diagnosis and treatment. The early diagnosis of skin cancers is possible only by self-examination. So you must do self-examination at least once a month, preferably after taking a shower or bath and using a mirror when necessary. If you notice any change in your moles or any other part of your body while examining yourself, please see your doctor
Melanoma is more common in men than women. This type of cancer has been increasing rapidly over the past few decades and is rarely seen in children and adolescents. In Caucasians, it accounts for 80-90% of all malignant skin cancers and 5% of malignant tumors in general. In African Americans, it rarely occurs before 40 years of age whereas it is seen at an early age in Caucasians (in those under 30 years).
Symptoms: Skin cancers generally appear as a wound or lump on the skin. Most often, they are painless. However, they can also form red, scaly patches that can be confused with eczema (dermatitis) or psoriasis (used for chronic itching).
If you have a suspicious wound or lump on your skin you should see a doctor immediately. In some cases, this may occur without any symptoms at all. Therefore, it is very important that we regularly check our skin and see an expert when we feel suspicious.
Skin cancer is the most seen cancer type above all.
The most important factor in protection from skin cancer is sun protection. Excessive exposure to the sun (especially second-degree sunburn with blisters, including tanning) increases the risk of skin cancer. Other factors that increase the risk of skin cancer; repeated exposure to medical and industrial X-rays, skin diseases that heal with burns or scarring, occupational exposure to substances containing coal tar or arsenic, and a family history of skin cancer. People with fair skin who are more likely to get sunburn have a higher risk. Since sun rays are the most important cause of skin cancer, the most important protective measure is to avoid the sun.
Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the world. Most skin cancers are associated with UV rays and can be prevented by avoiding the sun.
Sunlight is the most important cause of skin cancer. The sun’s rays damage the DNA inside our cells, which can cause cancer in our skin. In addition to sunlight, X-rays, industrial chemicals, and radiation are also known to cause skin cancer.
Skin cancers that originate from pigment cells (melanocytes) are called melanoma and non-melanoma (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma). Non-melanoma skin cancers are more common than melanomas.
Melanoma is a very serious disease that can spread to other parts of the body if not treated early. Skin cancers that do not extend to the lymph nodes and survive for 5 years are called “cured”.
