Should dental floss be used?
Home care is the be-all and end-all of a healthy mouth. Dental floss or tape, along with other aids such as a toothpick, interdental brush or periodontal stick, is an indispensable means of cleaning the interdental spaces. Waxed, unwaxed or with a holder – dental floss comes in many varieties.
Daily tooth brushing is important – because it removes harmful deposits, also known as plaque or biofilm. This consists of a large number of bacteria that settle on the tooth surface and the spaces between them. If the bacteria stay too long, they attack the tooth enamel and damage the gums. This increases the risk of caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.
The toothbrush is not enough!
Regular cleaning with a toothbrush and toothpaste is the basis for keeping teeth and gums healthy.
To clean your teeth thoroughly, you need more than a toothbrush. It only cleans the smooth and chewing surfaces well and reliably from harmful plaque. It does not penetrate effectively into the gaps. The missing 30 percent of the cleaning takes over the dental floss.
In other countries, such as the USA, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Holland, using dental floss is a natural part of daily oral hygiene. Here in our latitudes, the effectiveness of this dental care is less common. It is only used by about every 10th person. Hardly any other oral hygiene aid for young people is so recommendable for removing food residue and foul-smelling plaque from between the teeth.
The hygiene products industry offers a wide range of products that meet individual needs:
- Thick and thin threads
- Raft and tape
- Dental floss fluoridated with and without flavoring
- smooth and rough products
- Threads with medicinal additives such as fluoride or chlorhexidine
- Dental floss for on the go and at home
- Special dental flosses for implants
- Electric dental floss
As interest in your dental health grows, dental floss becomes more valuable for plaque removal, removing bitten food particles and controlling bad breath.
The right silk for every oral situation!
The recommendation of dental floss requires tailored, individual hygiene guidance that you receive through your dental practice.
How do I use dental floss correctly?
It is recommended to use the dental floss before going to bed. It doesn’t matter whether before or after brushing your teeth. The most important thing is that the harmful plaque is systematically removed once a day.
Approximately 50 centimeters of dental floss are required for an application using the threading technique. It is best to hold the floss with your thumb and forefinger. You can also wrap them around your middle or index finger.
Then insert the floss into the interdental space by moving it back and forth and remove the plaque by moving it up and down. Use a new piece of dental floss for each additional gap.
