Scoliosis

Scoliosis generally divides into 2 groups: Structural and functional (non-structural). Overall, it can be said that the structural scoliosis is due to permanent changes in vertebrae and soft tissues (ligaments, ligaments, joint capsules, etc.). In functional scoliosis, the skewness in the back is due to factors that are not linked to the vertebrae or their soft parts.

Treatment of scoliosis:

Your chiropractor can help you determine the cause of skewed back / scoliosis. In addition, with the help of manipulation treatment, soft tissue treatment, stretching exercises and instruction in training exercises, the chiropractor can reduce the pain due to scoliosis. The chiropractor can also perform an X-ray to further assess the scoliosis, as well as advise on whether it e.g. advised to use a shoe insert. If you are in doubt about whether a crooked back can be treated, you are welcome to contact us.

Symptoms:

The symptom picture for scoliosis can be very varied, and ranges from no symptoms at all to significant pain, effects on heart / lung function, nerve root effects, etc. Of importance for the symptom picture are the age of onset, the size of the curvature, duration, cause, other diseases present, etc.

In infants with scoliosis, no obvious symptoms are often experienced. In older children and adults, back pain is often experienced, which varies in intensity, but which is often more or less constant. However, it is important to emphasize that many people have scoliosis without having symptoms.

Causes:

  • Functional:
  • Static (leg length difference, pelvic asymmetry)
  • Posture-related (eg due to tight / shortened muscles in hip, knee or ankle)
  • Painful (posture)
  • Inflammatory (eg appendicitis)

Structural:

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause) (approximately 85% of structural scoliosis)
  • Congenital
  • Neuromuscular
  • Neurofibromatosis of Recklinghausen
  • Mesenchymal disorders
  • Secondary scoliosis (due to rheumatoid arthritis, tumor in the spine, etc.)
