Scoliosis Recommendations
If your child has scoliosis and seems to be growing very rapidly in height it may be worthwhile going to your physiotherapist/rehabilitation physician for some exercises as well as other therapies such as electrotherapy, massage and ultrasound that can help him with pain control and relaxation. The spinal correction will not occur overnight instead it can be achieved through maintenance of good posture and regular exercise. If a curvature is detected at an early stage your rehabilitation physician can prescribe exercises to help prevent it from worsening or becoming more prominent but only if exercises are started at this early stage!
Treatment of scoliosis should start in childhood. The child needs to be encouraged, on a daily basis, to develop a correct posture, that is, the one that demands less muscular effort to guarantee protection for all the structures of the backbone. Once these habits are acquired, ideally, they should be observed for a lifetime.
As for adolescents and adults:
Those with scoliosis should avoid carrying weight on one shoulder or on one side of the body. When out shopping it is better to use a basket instead of a bag. Avoid having just one shoulder bag or case and avoid having a wallet in the back pocket of your trousers.
Use orthopedic pillows at night. Pillows adapted to this type of curvature can help to maintain better alignment during sleep and thus prevent further worsening of symptoms.
Wear orthopedic corsets or braces that act as external support, while enabling free mobility of body parts. They distribute pressure more evenly throughout the spine and rib cage. They also provide an adequate support for the muscles, which corrects the curvature of the spine itself by preventing further progression and favoring its improvement.

It is also important to have a balanced diet and maintain an ideal body weight. It is recommended that the child does some form of physical activity every day. An active lifestyle contributes to overall health and will help prevent excessive weight gain during childhood and adolescence.
Finally, it is essential that the child has periodic evaluations with his/her doctor in order to monitor growth and development and detect any abnormalities as early as possible.
Children should be encouraged, on a daily basis, to develop adequate posture. As for the treatment of scoliosis, the first step is to determine if the curve is flexible or rigid.
If the curve is flexible, then it can be treated by means of exercises that favor stretching in the concavity of the curve and strengthening of the muscles in convexity.
In order to determine if the curve is flexible or rigid, a new x-ray will be performed with the patient being asked to arch his back as much as possible. If there are no changes in the curve (rigid), then it will require a surgical procedure. If there are changes in the curves (flexible), then it can be treated with exercises.
In patients with rigid curves, bracing won’t correct their deformities because they are already “fixed” and surgery will be necessary.
