Scoliosis: Causes and symptoms

In the case of scoliosis, the spine is curved to the right or left, and sometimes there is a double bend. If you look at a person from behind, then his head does not lean in line with the arms and legs, but shifted to one side – this is how the curvature of the spine manifests itself. In this case, the lower body is distorted along with the back. However, more often than not, scoliosis is accompanied by asymmetry of the limbs: on the one hand they are longer (or shorter), than on another.

Scoliosis can last a lifetime if not treated in time. This disease can lead to serious complications – damage to internal organs (heart, lungs) and nerve endings. The most terrible consequence of scoliosis is a violation of blood circulation in the lower extremities – gangrene or amputation.

The most common causes of scoliosis are:
  • Congenital factors (for example, a heterogeneous muscle and bone structure).
  • Intervention of the central nervous system.
  • Infectious diseases.
  • Rheumatism.
  • Injuries and fractures (especially those not treated properly).
  • Infection in the spine.

Scoliosis can also be caused by neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida.

Scoliosis can also develop gradually from poor posture or from damage to the spine after an injury.

Although genes are not known to cause scoliosis, studies have shown that scoliosis is more likely to occur in some families. Most cases of scoliosis are mild and have no clear cause.

Signs and symptoms of scoliosis include:

  • The curvature of the spine, when viewed from behind.
  • One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other.
  • One shoulder higher than the other.
  • One hip higher than another.
  • The ribs on one side are more prominent than on the other side.

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine in the form of a “corkscrew”. To determine this disease can be visually, if you look at the person from behind. The back of the sick person is slightly curved to one side. If you examine it from the front, then the projection of the shoulder will be at an angle to the plane of symmetry of the body.

Scoliosis is a fairly common and dangerous disease in which the patient’s spine assumes an unnatural position. This happens as a result of curvature of the spine, which can be either lateral (one side) or both side (S-shaped).

The main cause of scoliosis is a mismatch in the development of muscle and bone tissue in adolescence. This means that the bone skeleton is quickly removed, and muscle tissue does not have time to create a kind of supporting corset for him. This scoliosis is called idiopathic and is the most common. Provoking factor in the formation of the disease is carrying heavy objects in one hand.

Scoliosis can also occur as a result of congenital anomalies, injuries, degenerative changes in intervertebral discs, inflammation and tumors, as well as other pathologies that cause muscle weakness. Scoliosis is considered to be a disease of growth. However, if not treated in time, it can last a lifetime and eventually lead to serious complications.
