Rhinoplasty

Featured as one of the most sought after plastic surgeries in the country and in the world, rhinoplasty is a surgery that aims to improve the appearance and proportion of the nose. As a result, the patient can have their self-esteem improved by achieving better facial harmony.

However, rhinoplasty is not a procedure that has only an aesthetic purpose. This is because, through this intervention, it is also possible to alleviate breathing difficulties caused by structural abnormalities of the nose. For this, it may be necessary to combine the surgery with another intervention — such as correction of a deviated septum. Learn more about nose job surgery below.

Who is rhinoplasty surgery indicated for?

Rhinoplasty is indicated for men and women who have already completed the development of the facial structure – which usually happens from the age of 15 – and are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose.

It is indicated for plastic surgery on the nose in patients who have tortuosity caused by an injury, who have an asymmetry at birth, or even patients with the shape of the nose in disharmony with the rest of the face.

As mentioned, nose surgery can also be performed in conjunction with other interventions. Individuals who have nasal problems can combine rhinoplasty with other procedures that help alleviate respiratory discomfort, such as nasal septum correction and turbinectomy — performed with the aim of removing spongy flesh.

Other plastic surgeries can also be aligned with rhinoplasty for an even more gratifying aesthetic result for the patient, such as eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty.

It is essential that the patient aligns their expectations with the plastic surgeon, so that it is possible to understand whether the desired plastic surgery is the most appropriate procedure to resolve the dissatisfaction presented. Even in the initial consultations that precede the operation, the doctor must assess whether the individual is in the necessary conditions — both physically and mentally — to undergo rhinoplasty.

It is important that the patient has realistic expectations about the procedure and the results that can be achieved from it. In addition, it is essential that the person opts for surgery seeking the resolution of individual discomforts and desires, and never being influenced by the opinion of third parties.

Preoperative care

To perform rhinoplasty, as in practically all surgical procedures, the patient must undergo some tests that aim to identify possible risks to their health. The main assessments requested are:

  • Bloodtests;
  • Cardiological assessment;
  • Potassium dosage;
  • Sodium;
  • Coagulogram;
  • Creatinine;
  • Urea.

Imaging tests such as CT scans, nasofibroscopy and facial x-rays may also be needed.

These exams are essential to assess the patient’s health conditions, allowing the surgeon to identify possible complications that may occur during the procedure — also understanding whether these possible complications are an impediment to surgery.

In addition to the exams, the patient must also provide information about their health habits and medical history. The surgeon will also be able to examine, measure and photograph the patient’s face for better intervention planning.

Still in the rhinoplasty postoperative period, the surgeon will recommend some essential care for the procedure, such as discontinuing the use of drugs that have anticoagulant action, stopping tobacco consumption — if the patient is a smoker — and avoiding ingestion. of alcoholic beverages weeks before the procedure.

The patient should also pay attention to fasting to be performed on the day of surgery and which will be recommended by the surgeon during the consultation. Usually fasting is eight hours. It is also necessary to be accompanied and to have the help of someone on the day of surgery and post-operatively.
