What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure of the nose, which often has a purely aesthetic purpose. But it can also be used to improve impaired nasal breathing or to remove severe deformity. The rhinoplasty can usually be performed under local anaesthesia, but sometimes under general anaesthetic. In the course of this operation, the surgeon creates an incision in the nose, usually in the area between the nostrils (columella). Depending on how pronounced the change should be, this cut may also be placed inside the nasal cavity.

After that, he will correct the nasal septum and/or straighten out any curvatures in the nasal bones. With the help of needles and chisels, he can reshape and reposition these parts of your nose as needed. After correcting their shape, he will close up your skin again with fine stitches.

The external nose consists of two nasal bones, the nasal septum and two nasal wings. The nasal wings are formed from cartilage and are responsible for the shape of the nose, as well as for the free flow of air through the nose. The nasal septum separates the inside of the nose into two chambers and is made up of cartilage and bone.

In a rhinoplasty, a plastic surgeon can correct, change or repair these parts of the nose. A rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Depending on what you want to achieve with your rhinoplasty, there are three different types:

Aesthetic rhinoplasty

If you would like to have a purely aesthetic operation, you will discuss with your plastic surgeon how you want to change your nose, which goals you have in mind and which possible complications could arise.

Functional rhinoplasty

You may also want to modify or repair your nose for functional reasons. For example, operations on the nasal septum can help improve breathing problems or a deviated septum. This type of operation is also called “septorhinoplasty”.

A rhinoplasty, or nose job, can be performed to change the shape and size of the nose. The procedure is often used to improve the appearance of the nose, but it can also be used to improve breathing.

How do I know if I would benefit from a rhinoplasty?

If you are unhappy with the shape or size of your nose, a rhinoplasty may help. A rhinoplasty can be performed to:

  • improve the appearance of your nose
  • change the size of your nose in relation to other facial structures
  • narrow or alter the bridge or tip of your nose
  • remove humps or depressions in your bridge
  • change the angle between your nose and upper lip
  • improve breathing problems caused by structural defects in your nose

The nose as the central focus of the face

The nose is the central point of the face. Accordingly, it is usually the part of the face that we notice first when we look at someone. If you are not satisfied with your own nose, you will often wish to change it. The reason for this can be a congenital malformation, an accident or simply one’s own dissatisfaction with one’s own appearance. Many people find their nose too large or too small, too crooked, have a hump on the bridge of their nose or have a tip that does not harmonize with the rest of the face.
