The rhinoplasty technique
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery of the nose. It consists of reshaping or reconstructing a nose.
Several causes can lead patients to resort to this operation. For aesthetic reasons. You don’t like the shape of your nose, whether you have a hooked, aquiline, upturned, flattened or snub nose, you can resort to such an operation. But rhinoplasty can also correct more significant aesthetic abnormalities, such as an anomaly of congenital origin. In addition, in some cases, rhinoplasty can be performed on a patient who, following an accident or removal, wishes to have a nose reconstructed. Heavier, it allows to find a real well-being for the patient. We will talk more about restorative rhinoplasty.
Alongside conventional surgery, there are new techniques such as ultrasonic rhinoplasty or “Preservation Rhinoplasty”. Your surgeon will be able to advise you best during the consultation on the method suitable for you.
Rhinoplasty: how is the procedure performed?
Before the surgery, it is essential to make an appointment with your surgeon for an initial consultation. You will have the opportunity to express your aesthetic desires and your surgeon will carry out an accurate diagnosis of your condition. He will assess all the contraindications to ensure that all the lights are open to perform such an operation.
During rhinoplasty, the surgeon will make incisions inside the patient’s nose, at each nostril. In some cases, an incision may be made on the outside of the nose, across what we call the columella, to give the surgeon easier access to the nasal structure. Once the incisions have been made, the practitioner can reshape the structure of your nose:
- Reduce a bump
- Raise or stretch the tip of the nose.
- Refine the tip of the nose
- Reduce a nose that is too long or too wide.
- Correct a deviated nose.
- Improve the appearance of the bridge of the nose
- Rebuild an entire nose: tissues, mucous membranes, cartilage and bone structure.
After rhinoplasty, the patient will need to wear a cast or splint to protect their nose. The appearance of edema and bruising occurs after the intervention and fades over time. The patient may have a slight loss of smell and taste. This is due to inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose. Rest assured, this is temporary. The patient should consider resuming social and professional activities only 10 days after his rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty: the results obtained
The results obtained following rhinoplasty appear gradually. Some changes are visible quickly. The disappearance of a bump is obvious as soon as the splint is removed and we can begin to judge a more convincing result after two to three months. The patient will have to be patient and wait between 6 months to a year to obtain the final result.
Why such a long time? Quite simply because the skin that covers the bony and cartilaginous framework of the nose must readapt to the new shape of the nose. The time it takes for the skin to retract depends on both how well it heals and how elastic it is. Thus, the evolution will be faster for thin skins than for thick skins. Age also plays an important role, since the younger you are, the more elastic the skin.
The objective is to obtain a nasal appendage in accordance with the patient’s wishes, to respect the proportions between the different parts of the nose so that it fits naturally into the face.
It should be noted that in the event that the patient is not satisfied, it is possible after one year to make a touch-up.
