Properties and benefits of chia seeds

Proteins, vitamins, mineral salts, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, dietary fibers and sugars: it seems incredible that such small seeds can contain all these nutritional properties. Yet, it has been shown that 100 grams of chia seeds are able to guarantee 50% of the daily requirement of many of the vitamins and minerals important for the body.

In particular, these seeds are rich in vitamins A, B and C, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, manganese and iron, as well as various antioxidants such as caffeic, ferulic acid and quercetin.

All these properties guarantee the well-being of bones, muscles, heart and brain, with positive effects on the nervous, cardiovascular and blood pressure systems.

They are also an excellent source of vegetable proteins, contain all 8 essential amino acids and offer the body a fair amount of carbohydrates, mainly in the form of insoluble fiber.

Consequently, they are very suitable for maintaining a constant blood sugar level, promoting intestinal regularity and offering a greater sense of satiety. For this reason, the consumption of chia seeds as part of a low-calorie diet represents a valid support in the fight against extra pounds and promotes the increase of lean mass.

Not only that, as already mentioned, in contact with liquids they produce a dense and gelatinous substance that acts as a barrier between the intestine and sugars, delaying their absorption, and protecting the mucous membranes from any bacterial attacks.

The content of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids is also exceptional in these seeds, to the point that no other food is able to reach the same values for the same weight. These are essential for combating inflammation, lowering bad cholesterol, regulating the functionality of the heart and cardiovascular system, stabilizing mood and improving cognitive functions.

Consequently, chia seeds prove to be excellent allies in the prevention of diseases involving the heart and circulation, tumors and strokes.

Finally, since they are able to absorb and retain a lot of water, they guarantee constant and prolonged hydration to the body.
