What is the nasal priming? Types of nose fuses and their size

What are the nose fuses and why are they used?

The nasal wick is a soft, spongy pad with a 15 cm thread attached to its end, which facilitates changing the position of the tampon in the nose and making it easier to remove. The surgeon will mix the wicks with antibiotic ointments, epinephrine, and sometimes lidocaine before putting them in the nose. This action prevents bleeding after surgery. Nasal tampons are also used at the end of rhinoplasty in which the nasal septum is reconstructed, such as septoplasty (deviation of the nose), corneal resection or sinus surgery and polyps as well. Because the nasal wick prevents blood clots (hematomas).

What is the size of the cotton nose wick in centimeters?

Cotton wick size ranges from 15 to 30 cm. But there is also a small nasal wick about the size of a finger, between 5 and 8 cm.

What are the types of nasal priming?

There are different types of nasal fuses and it is up to the surgeon to decide which type of nasal fuse is most suitable for you. Nasal tampons can be made of sterile gauze, foam, or sterile cotton. The nasal wick used in the past was large, and removing it from the nose was painful and uncomfortable for the patient. Today, however, there is a small nasal wick in the form of small wicks, and removing it from the nose does not cause the slightest pain or discomfort.

Some nasal wicks also have a silicone airway so the patient can breathe more easily, called a stent. But it is less effective than a fully blocked nose wick. These airways, which are a kind of internal splint, are an alternative to nasal tampons in rhinoplasty.

Why should a nose tampon be used after a rhinoplasty?

Nasal priming benefits

The most important use of a nasal tampon is to control nosebleeds by creating pressure on the blood vessels of the nose. The second benefit of the nasal wick is that it is impregnated with antibiotics so that it keeps the inner nasal cavity soft and moist, which prevents dryness and the adhesion of the mucous membranes and the skin of the nose more than necessary, and as a result, it prevents the formation of sores and nasal infections.

The third benefit of a medical nasal tampon is that it is like internal nasal splints, and in operations where the nasal septum is manipulated, it also prevents hematomas (blood clots in the nasal septum) and greatly helps in maintaining the new position of the nasal septum. But do not forget that the placement of the wick or not, does not have any effect on the final result of the operation and the shape of the nose.

Nasal priming complications

Nasal tampons are not harmful and the only side effect of nasal tampons is dryness of the nose. Because throughout the period that the wick is inside the nose, the patient will not be able to breathe through the nose and will only breathe through the nose, and this can cause some dryness in the mouth and throat. Of course, this is not an important issue and this problem will be solved immediately after removing the nasal sutures. During the twenty-four hours that the nasal wicks are in the nose, you can take warm fluids (not too cold nor too hot) to keep the mouth moist.
