Breast Cancer Symptoms

Breast cancer is a very serious type of cancer. For this reason, many health institutions and social responsibility projects carry out awareness raising activities on the subject of early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and the patient’s health will be restored. Breast cancer is a serious disease that women, especially women with risk factors, should be aware of and should take the necessary precautions.

Major Symptoms in Breast Cancer

  • A palpable mass in the breast or armpit
  • nipple discharge
  • Nipple retraction or deformity
  • Nipple skin peeling, crusting
  • sore or redness on breast skin
  • Edema, swelling, inward retraction on the breast skin

If at least one of these symptoms is present, a specialist should be consulted without delay. However, in some patients, without any of these symptoms, cancer can only be detected by mammography and ultrasound examination.

We recommend women to have mammography, ultrasound and breast examination once a year, even if they do not have any complaints from the age of 40. In this way, breast cancer can be detected at a very early stage. If a woman goes to the doctor after noticing a mass in her breast, it is not possible to talk about very early diagnosis.

It takes a long time for a cancerous cell in the breast to form a tumor and reach the size that the woman can notice. Women are only 1-1.5cm. They can detect a mass that has reached a large size during the examination. However, it is possible to diagnose even millimetric cancers with radiological imaging methods.

The most important factor for treatment is the organ preservation. When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, for example ductal carcinoma in situ, our goal is to preserve the whole breast with all the techniques we have. In this way, a woman does not need mastectomy and she can get back to normal life quickly.

But if the tumor is too big and it has invaded other parts of the body like lymph nodes or lungs, there are only chemotherapy and radiotherapy without any operation. However, we do not give up on these patients; we use hormonal methods on them and try to shrink their tumors with chemotherapy.

If you are under 50 years of age, we recommend that you have a mammogram every year. If you are over 50 years of age, we recommend that you have a mammogram every other year.

Ultrasound and breast examination should be done at least once a year for all women over the age of 40. Breast cancer can be very early in this way.

If a woman notices mass in her breast and goes to the doctor, it is not possible to talk about early diagnosis.

Breast cancer is a disease that grows in the cells of the mammary glands. Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an X-ray or felt as a lump. The tumor is malignant (cancer) if the cells can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. In addition, when breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it may cause swelling of lymph nodes under arms and above collarbone, pain, nausea, weight loss and bone fractures.
