Listening to music with headphones for a long time

Continuous exposure to sound from MP3 players, discos, concerts and noise at work can damage hearing. Once acquired, hearing loss cannot be cured, not even through surgery.

Whether music is harmful to your ears depends on how loud you listen, how long you listen, and how often you pause.

Music with headphones is often heard between 70 and 100 decibels, in discos the sound level is typically 93 to 100 dB(A) and at concerts it is usually 100 dB(A). However, it becomes critical for the ears from 85 dB(A).

24/7 music sounds good, but…

this constant exposure to sound prevents the recovery of the so-called cilia (the finest hairs on the hair cells) in the inner ear, which stick together or even break off over time.

Good to know:

Overloaded cilia develop a circulatory disorder and die prematurely due to the lack of energy. Dead cilia are irrevocably lost and cannot be replaced with surgery. Hearing damage caused by loud music or work noise is therefore not curable. While in primitive peoples 70-year-olds often still have the fine hearing of a 30-year-old, 30-year-olds in our country sometimes already have the blunted hearing of a 70-year-old. Studies in European countries show that one in four young people is already affected by hearing loss. In addition to the sound of very loud children’s toys or the bang of fireworks, loud music in discos, at concerts or from headphones also contributes to this.
