You may experience some worrisome side effects after placing the balloon inside the stomach, contact your doctor immediately if nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain occur at any time after surgery, it may be a sign of damage to the stomach balloon, which includes the following:

1. Deflation of the balloon

If the stomach balloon retracts, there is a risk that it will travel through your digestive system, and this can cause a blockage, and may require emergency surgery to remove the device.

2. Change in urine color

Your balloon is usually filled with a saline solution that contains a blue dye. In the rare cases that the solution leaks from the stomach balloon, you’ll know right away because the color of your urine and stool will change.

3. Brine leak

The saline may seep through the intestines like regular food, and can cause a blockage on its way.

4. Other Gastric Balloon Damage

Other possible stomach balloon damages include:

  • Over-inflation of the balloon.
  • Acute pancreatitis;
  • An ulcer or a hole in the stomach wall, which may require emergency surgery to repair.
  • Stomach perforation that occurs can be attributed to the following:

Excessive constant pressure exerted by the constant contact of the balloon itself on the stomach wall.
Erosion and ulcers.
Not following a healthy lifestyle, such as: a lot of soft drinks.
Failure to adhere to the medication prescribed by the doctor.
