Gastric Balloon
For patients who are very overweight (BMI – Body Mass Index between at least 28 and 40) and have a strong desire to lose weight, the so-called gastric balloon is a treatment option that is as simple as it is gentle, non-surgical and at the same time effective.
The gastric balloon is usually used when other removal techniques have already failed or there is an increased risk of surgery for the patient. Accordingly, the use of a gastric balloon is a non-surgical procedure that supports you in your desire to lose weight.
How it works:
The principle is very simple: the gastric balloon, which is made of soft silicone and is initially empty and flabby, is inserted directly into the stomach via the mouth and esophagus. There it is filled with a sterile and physically well-tolerated saline solution. Once the gastric balloon is filled, it cannot slip out of the stomach either through the esophagus or the small intestine.
Since the volume of the stomach is now partially filled by the gastric balloon, a feeling of fullness occurs more quickly when eating. As a result, smaller meals are eaten. And this, in turn, makes it possible to lose weight without feeling hungry. In this way, over the course of the treatment (6 or 12 months), your body will get used to healthier portion sizes almost automatically.
This simple procedure eliminates the need for incisions or stitches and generally takes around 20-30 minutes. It is also important in this context that the gastric balloon is only used temporarily, in contrast to permanent surgical changes. Depending on your wishes, it remains in the stomach for 6 or 12 months and is then removed just as gently.
Benefits
- Non-surgical intervention
- Non-invasive intervention
- Temporary form of treatment
Disadvantage
- The wearing period of only 6 months, which is often perceived as a disadvantage, can now be conveniently extended to 12 months. The resulting costs are put into perspective very strongly (cf. ‘Costs’ below):
- In individual cases (e.g. due to damage), the gastric balloon can lose its fluid. However, since we add a dye to the filling, you will be immediately informed of the emptying by the bluish/green discolouration of the urine. In such a case, please notify us immediately so that we can remove the damaged gastric balloon.
- In individual cases, the stretching of the stomach wall can lead to pressure damage and ulcers.
