EARLY DETECTION EXAMINATION

The first screening test takes place immediately after birth. Depending on the place of delivery, it is carried out by a paediatrician, gynecologist or midwife. The examination includes a complete physical examination with a special focus on any birth defects or injuries. To assess the state of health of the newborn, the so-called APGAR values are assigned after 1.5 and 10 minutes. The pH value of the umbilical cord blood is also measured. Body weight, length and head circumference are measured. For the first time, the infant receives vitamin K in the form of drops to compensate for an undersupply that can cause blood clotting disorders.

This examination takes place between the 3rd and 10th day of life of the child and takes place either in the maternity clinic or, in the case of early discharge, by your pediatrician. It again includes the complete physical examination with special attention to spontaneous motor skills, reflexes, indications of malformations. As with every preventive medical check-up, the body dimensions, weight, length and head circumference, are measured and documented. A special feature is the so-called Guthrie test, a blood test with which various metabolic diseases and hormone disorders can be detected at an early stage. It is taken from the heel or vein between the 36th and 72nd hour of life. Vitamin K is given again.

This examination takes place between the 4th and 5th week of life with us as your paediatricians. We examine your child thoroughly and pay attention to general behavior, assess bodily functions, hearing, reflexes and carry out an ultrasound examination of the hip in order to identify developmental disorders or malformations at an early stage and to provide appropriate treatment. Talking to you is important to us in order to find out how your child is drinking and sleeping. At this point your baby should be gaining around 150g per week and drinking around 15% of body weight. Of course we are also there for you if you have any questions, problems or worries. As your child’s family doctor, we are always happy to be your contact in all matters.

This examination takes place between the 3rd and 4th month of life. We examine your child thoroughly, paying attention to their general behavior and using various techniques to assess your child’s mobility and ability to react. In the course of the examination we recognize the ability to make contact, indications of hearing and vision. Your child should now be able to hold its head up well when lying on its stomach and conduct its first babble dialogues. As part of this examination, after a detailed discussion with you, we carry out the officially recommended vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, polio, HIB (Haemophilus influenza B), hepatitis B and pneumococci. This examination takes place around the age of 6 months. In addition to the general examination of your child, the main focus is on checking mobility and body control. We check whether the child can support himself on his arms when lying on his stomach and whether he can pull himself up if you hold him with two fingers. The infant should be able to hold his head well in a sitting position and should now be able to reach for objects in a targeted manner. It is also important to check your hearing. We go into the continuation of the necessary supplementary food and the importance of the exclusive administration of unsweetened drinks. If you have any illnesses, allergies or intolerances, we will discuss the necessary measures with you. When examining the eyes, we pay particular attention to signs of squinting.
For a much more thorough and precise examination of the eyes, we can offer you a special computer-aided method in our practice. This is possible from the age of 6 months. The children only have to look into a camera while sitting on their mother’s lap. The cooperation of the patient is thus reduced to a minimum and you get a very useful result.
