How long can I stay in the sun?

Based on one’s own appearance and reaction to the sun, six skin types can be distinguished:

Type I:
very light skin, blue eyes, freckles: self-protection time = max. 10 minutes

Type II:
light skin, light hair and light eyes, slow tanning: self-protection time = max. 20 minutes

Type III:
medium-light skin type, rather dark hair, occasional sunburn: self-protection time = max. 30 minutes

Type IV:
tan skin, dark hair and dark eyes: self-protection time = max. 45 minutes

Type V:
dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes, rarely sunburn: self-protection time = max. 60 minutes

Type VI:
black skin and hair, dark eyes: self-protection time = max. 90 minutes

The self-protection time indicates the period in which the body can be exposed to the sun without sunscreen. The following calculation shows you how you can also calculate the effectiveness of your sun protection:

Self-protection time x sun protection factor of the sunscreen = maximum time in the sun

Since the result indicates the maximum time frame, 40% of the calculated time should be deducted to be on the safe side. Nevertheless, you should avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. At this time of day, a particularly large amount of UV-B radiation hits the earth.
