What is gastric balloon ?

The gastric balloon consists of a soft and stretchable medical-grade plastic. This is placed in the stomach via an insert tube and filled with a saline solution via a filling system. When inflated, the balloon is too big to move into the intestine and thus remains in the stomach for months. Patients get full much faster and hungry much less quickly. In controlled studies, patients lost an average of 17 – 35 kg depending on the model. With the Spatz 3M gastric balloon, the highest success rates and the greatest loss of excess weight were achieved.

How does the gastric balloon work?

The balloon pre-fills the stomach. As a result, the patient needs less food until a feeling of satiety sets in.

How is the gastric balloon inserted into the stomach?

The balloon is inserted through the mouth into the stomach in the compact, uninflated state. A surgical intervention is not required for this. As a rule, the gastric balloon is inserted under twilight sedation. You will be given a drug that will make you fall asleep (propofol). You simply sleep through the procedure and wake up again after about 20 minutes. Once the balloon is in the stomach, it is filled with a sterile saline solution through a small inflation tube (catheter) attached to the balloon. A control liquid is added to the saline solution, which turns the urine green. In the rare event that a gastric balloon leaks, patients notice this immediately through the discoloration of their urine. After filling, the doctor removes the catheter. The balloon is equipped with a self-sealing valve and now floats freely in the stomach. In the months that follow, the gastric balloon takes up space in the stomach and stimulates the important nerves above the stomach. Patients get full much faster and hungry much less quickly. In cooperation with nutritionists or follow-up caregivers, this effect is used to gently change the diet over months, so that patients can lose weight successfully in the long term.
