Early use can damage children’s brains

A study from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the US found that too much screen time can change the structure of young children’s brains.

The team around Dr. For this purpose, John Hutton examined the so-called white matter using magnetic resonance imaging of 47 healthy children aged three to five years. The result: in children who regularly played with smartphones or tablets, the white matter – the conductive pathways and nerve fibers in the brain – was significantly less dense.

According to the researchers, this has direct, measurable effects on the children’s brain performance. In cognitive tests, they often had problems with speaking and recognizing objects. This is not surprising, because the white matter is important for the transport of signals and information and is therefore responsible for processing in the brain.

It was also shown that the use of technical devices at a young age has a negative impact on children’s attention span.

The study results were published in the English-language journal “AMA Pediatrics”. According to the researchers, further investigations – especially on the effects of media use in the early stages of brain development – are now necessary.

Risk of myopia is increased

Excessive use of smartphones, tablets and computers in early childhood can also lead to more myopia, according to ophthalmologists.

“Studies show that myopia is influenced by lifestyle to around 50 percent,” says Bettina Wabbels from the University Eye Clinic Bonn for the Society for Ophthalmology of the German Press Agency. So far, there is evidence of this mainly from Asian countries. “This wave is now rolling towards us too.”

In children under the age of three, frequent staring at nearby computer screens causes the eyeball to grow and thus to longer eyes, explains the ophthalmologist. “Once an eye has grown like this, it no longer shrinks. From the age of twelve, the course is set for the eyes,” she adds. Short-sightedness is then sealed for life.

What parents should consider

Parents should think about and talk to their children about their children’s media use to educate them about possible dangers. Too much media use can mean kids don’t spend enough time playing, studying, communicating, or sleeping during the day, researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center report.

For ppl who say samsung watch is better than this one, just know your priority and decide what to buy. Garmin mainly focuses on fitness and samsung main focus is on smart watch features. If you prioritise fitness over smart features, them Garmin is your best go.

I use a Garmin watch (old model) which I brought directly from US and its good enough for the price I paid. If you are buying this from India it just doesn’t worth the price.
