Hair loss through nutritional deficiencies

In the case of diffuse, non-scarring hair loss, doctors often assume an iron deficiency as the cause. If this is detected early enough and treated, the hair usually grows back again. Since iron deficiency is not immediately recognizable by its symptoms, it is often caused by hair loss. A simple blood test confirms an iron deficiency. In addition to iron tablets, food rich in iron – such as red meat or legumes – should be on the menu more often.

If too little vitamin B7 is taken into the body with food (for example with a vegan diet), the body’s own formation of the biotin-dependent enzyme 5 alpha reductase may be reduced and DHT cannot be formed from testosterone. This leads to an increased production of testosterone and thus to premature hair loss.

The appearance of the hair is important for many people. Therefore, it often comes to fears about health as soon as the hair begins to fall out or thin. The causes of diffuse hair loss are manifold and can be divided into three main areas:

  • The scalp (hormonal, inflammatory and infectious diseases)
  • The hair follicles (genetic predisposition, drugs)
  • The nutrition (nutritional deficiencies, toxic substances)

Important nutrients are vitamins A and E as well as all B vitamins, especially biotin and pantothenic acid. The trace elements zinc and copper are also important for healthy hair.

Long-term nutrient deficiency can lead to diffuse hair loss. In addition, the following diseases are among the causes of diffuse hair loss:

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g. lupus erythematosus)
  • Hormonal disorders (e.g. hyperthyroidism)
  • Chronic infectious diseases (especially in the scalp)
  • Events such as pregnancy and childbirth or after certain medical treatments
  • Taking medication, especially anti-cancer drugs

In addition to the causes already mentioned, diffuse hair loss can also be caused by a large number of other factors. These include:

  • hair disorders (e.g. trichotillomania)
  • stress
  • hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, thyroid problems, etc.)
  • long-term therapy with certain medications (e.g. antidepressants, diuretics, etc.)
  • certain skin diseases (psoriasis)
  • Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis)

Hair loss occurs naturally in our bodies and is not always a sign of illness. However, if the hair loss becomes noticeable over a longer period of time, it can be a sign of a serious illness. On the other hand, there are also some common false beliefs about baldness. In this article, we would like to give you information about causes and forms of hair loss.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss has many different causes, ranging from genetic predisposition to stress. There are also diseases that are associated with baldness, such as alopecia areata (hair loss in patches) or alopecia totalis (complete hair loss). If the hair does not grow again after the cause has been eliminated, it is called alopecia universalis (complete hair loss on the entire body).

Below is an overview of the most common causes of diffuse hair loss:

Genetic predisposition

The most common form of hair loss is hereditary hair thinning in male or female pattern baldness. The male pattern baldness is characterized by receding hairlines and receding temples; with the female pattern baldness, it is more general and diffuse hair thinning. In rare cases, however, hereditary baldness can occur.
