Hair loss in women is complex

Hair loss in women is a possible complex process that can not yet be fully explained scientifically.

There are three patterns of hereditary hair loss in women that are different than in men. Women do not bald or have a frontal retraction. In women, thinning of the hair on the crown of the head is more common, and greater transparency of the scalp is observed.

Female androgenetic alopecia has three different distribution patterns:

Diffuse weakening of the crown by preserving the frontal line.
2. Weakening and widening of the central part of the scalp with breaking of the frontal line
3. Weakening with bitemporal recession

The pathophysiology of androgenetic alopecia in women is more complex than in men. Genetics and androgens play a role but the mechanism of action is different. Smith and Wells reported a frequency of female hereditary baldness with an incidence of 54% in first-degree male relatives over 30 years of age and 21% in first-degree female relatives over 30 years of age.

The role of androgen hormones in women is not fully explained, although hair loss in women is indisputably linked to increased androgen levels. However, many women with androgenetic alopecia do not have elevated levels of circulating androgens, although they have been shown to have elevated levels of 5-alpha reductase (an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone), more androgen receptors, and lower levels of cytochrome P450. in estrogen).

This makes the follicle bigger again, the hair stronger and thicker, and the wasp density returns to normal.
