The main goal of treatment is to reduce breast size in men whose breasts don’t shrink on their own. The most common treatments include:
Medications: Certain drugs can help reduce breast size in men with gynecomastia. These medications include the anti-androgen drug spironolactone (Aldactone) and the estrogen-blocking drug tamoxifen (Soltamox).
Surgery: In severe cases of gynecomastia, surgery might be an option. Surgical options include liposuction and surgical removal of excess glandular tissue, or both.
Epidemiology
Gynecomastia occurs in approximately 40% to 60% of males during adolescence. This is largely because of the imbalance between estrogen and androgen during puberty. Gynecomastia during this period generally resolves spontaneously within two years.
Several studies have shown an increase in the incidence of gynecomastia in older men.In one study, 67% of older patients demonstrated a benign cause, whereas 33% had gynecomastia caused by malignancy or medications.
