General information
Scoliosis is a pathological curvature of the spine, in which there is a rotation around the longitudinal axis. The changes also affect the internal organs. They are compressed, change their position, which subsequently leads to a violation of their functionality.
Scoliosis is diagnosed in 5-10% of children. Girls get sick 9 times more often than boys. Children aged 5 to 12 fall into the risk category. During this period, the spine grows rapidly. If a child sits incorrectly at a desk, does not play sports, scoliosis develops especially quickly.
Symptoms of scoliosis in children
Signs of scoliosis in children depend on the degree of curvature of the spine relative to the normal position and, accordingly, the stage of the disease.
- First. The vertebral column is deviated by less than 10 degrees. On examination, the asymmetry of the shoulder blades, a slight stoop, and the location of the shoulders at different heights are noticeable.
- Second. The spine deviates by 10-25 degrees, twisting around its axis. In the place of curvature, a roller of muscle tissue is formed. In the upright position, a pronounced asymmetry of the shoulder blades, hips, and folds on the buttocks is visible. If the child leans forward, the vertebrae protrude unevenly, one of the shoulder blades rises higher.
- Third. This is an advanced stage of children’s curvature of the spine, in which one shoulder is noticeably higher than the other. One leg is shorter, the pelvic bones are skewed. The vertebrae acquire a wedge-shaped shape, in the area of \u200b\u200bthe ribs it allocates a hump. Along with external signs, scoliosis is indicated by a deterioration in well-being due to compression of internal organs. The child complains of headaches, shortness of breath, increased fatigue. Movement is limited. Due to the displacement of organs, problems arise with the digestive tract and urinary system.
- Fourth. The most severe degree in which the entire body is deformed. The hump in the area of the ribs is formed in the direction in front and behind. Vital organs (lungs, heart, liver, etc.) cannot function normally. The child feels severe pain in the neck, pelvis, limbs. Hands and feet go numb. Due to vegetative disorders, palpitations and high blood pressure are observed. Reduced immunity, the child often gets colds.
Treatment of scoliosis in children
The choice of treatment for scoliosis in children depends on the cause and degree of curvature of the spine, the age of the patient, and the severity of symptoms. With pathology of the 1st-2nd degree, it is enough to eliminate the causes of the curvature. Correction of the position of the spinal column is carried out with the help of massages and therapeutic exercises. Swimming, horseback riding, sleeping on a hard surface, and posture control are recommended.
For the treatment of scoliosis of the 2nd-3rd degree, additional methods are used:
- Physiotherapy;
- Manual therapy;
- Corseting.
