How is the introduction of gastrointestinal cylinder working?

At the base of the gastric balloon is lowered and inserted through the mouth passing through the esophagus to land in the stomach. To adjust it properly, it is inserted using a very thin and flexible elongated tube with a camera called an “endoscope”. The procedure, of course, is inconvenient, but in principle not painful. To further alleviate the pain, the patient is slightly anesthetized or soothed. The duration of the operation is usually about fifteen minutes.

Then, after a period of time determined by the choice of balloon, ranging from 3, 6 or 12 months, the balloon is lowered and then removed. In general, patients lose 20-30% of excess weight. However, this figure may vary from patient to patient, depending on individual metabolism and circumstances.

What are the benefits of the gastrointestinal cylinder?

Gastric balloon is becoming an increasingly popular solution for the benefits it offers, namely:

  • This is a non-surgical procedure, which therefore limits the risks associated with it.
  • Gastric balloon can be offered to everyone of all ages, including people over 60 years.
  • Speed of intervention: it lasts about fifteen minutes. In addition, it is painless and reversible.
  • This is a temporary method, as it lasts an average of six months; time to balance your metabolism and change your lifestyle.
  • Finally, it allows you to lose weight fairly quickly.

What are the disadvantages of the stomach cylinder?

Placement of a gastric balloon leads to several risks and disadvantages:

  • The intervention is not reimbursed by social security.
  • Risk of perforation of the esophagus and stomach when placing or removing the balloon.
  • Risk of vomiting and nausea during the first days of installation.
  • Risk of heaviness in the abdomen and back pain.
  • Risk of yo-yo effect, which usually causes more weight gain than lost weight.

What is the difference between gastric ball and gastric tape?

Before I get directly to the point, after discussing the differences between the two methods, I can already tell you that they have a common goal: to help you lose weight. But really, to be complete on this, it’s not just these 2 techniques. Depending on your situation, you may be offered:

  • gastric band
  • sleeve
  • bypass
  • mini bypass
  • gastric balloon

The gastric band is also called gastroplasty. This involves reducing the size of the stomach through surgery, where the ring is tightened around the upper stomach. Thus, it creates a small pocket between the end of the esophagus and the ring. It is this space that will remain available for food. You will quickly feel that you are no longer hungry and have little food. The diameter of the gastric band can be adjusted to the needs of each person thanks to the silicone tube. It is connected to the box under the skin. The tightness of the liquid in the tube can be adjusted by injecting or sucking it out. Of course, this is determined by the surgeon. Note that this operation is not final. You can remove the gastric band with the second operation.

The sleeve is a resection of the stomach, ie part of the abdomen is removed. Usually ⅔s is removed from the stomach. So, this is the final intervention, but one that does not disrupt the digestion of food. Indeed, food just slows down. For several years, there is also a sleeve gastroplasty, where the size of the stomach is reduced not by cutting it, but by ligation with non-absorbable threads and therefore is not final. This is done during fibroscopy, as well as the introduction of a gastric balloon.

The bypass involves detaching most of the stomach from the esophagus. The esophagus is then connected directly to the loop of the small intestine through the upper part of the stomach. The rest of your stomach is saved and bypassed as a “Y”. Given the limitations and risks, this operation is intended for people who suffer from severe eating disorders or have suffered a bad sleeve or fit of the gastric band. This operation can be reversible, but very complicated.

Finally, the gastric balloon (which interests us today) is a procedure performed with endoscopy under local anesthesia. Sometimes it is a capsule that has to be swallowed, as with the Elipse gastric balloon. Be sure to swallow it bloated in your doctor‘s office. Once in the stomach, you will do an x-ray to make sure it is in the right place. From there, the doctor can inflate it through a catheter that comes out of the mouth. It will then be displayed in turn when the radio checks again that the ball is properly inflated. Whichever ball you choose, it is a technique that helps to lose weight, but temporarily. A gastric balloon that reduces volume cannot stay in place for a lifetime. Therefore, it will have to be removed. It is often intended for obese people who need to lose weight before major surgery. This limits the risk of complications.
