Foods You Shouldn’t Eat After the Expiration Date

Eating out-of-date food can be dangerous due to the formation of various bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning. By storing foods correctly, you can avoid the nasty and sometimes severe effects of out-of-date foods. Some foods that can cause common food poisoning include:

  • Eggs: One of the most common causes of foodborne illness is salmonella in expired eggs. The longest you can keep eggs in the fridge is two weeks.
  • Meat: Two dangerous bacteria called E.coli and Listeri are present in packaged and pre-chopped meats. You run the risk of food poisoning if you consume meat that has been aged longer than a week.
  • Mixed greens: Spinach, lettuce, arugula and various other greens can become infected with the disease-causing E.coli bacteria in a very short time. For this reason, you should consume within 48 hours after opening the packages.
  • Oyster: If consumed past its date, oysters can be directly lethal due to the bacteria called V. vulnificus.
  • Fresh forest fruits: A type of bacteria called Cyclospora grows on fresh forest fruits. Do not consume forest fruits that show signs of mold and fungus.
  • Soft cheeses: While hard cheeses are not particularly prone to bacteria, soft cheese types are not safe after their expiration date. If you consume a moldy soft cheese, you could get food poisoning from listeriosis.
