Alopecia areata
Alopecia areata refers to the loss of hair of various sizes (round or oval) without any noticeable symptoms. It occurs mainly on the hair, but rarely can appear on the beard, eyebrows or eyelashes. In severe cases, the entire head may be lost (alopecia totalis) or all hairs may be lost all over the body (alopecia universalis). One or a few bald spots usually reappear after 4 to 12 months. However, it often recurs.
The cause of alopecia areata remains unclear. However, psychological stress, autoimmunity, and endocrine disorders are presumed to be the cause or trigger.
The prognosis of alopecia areata is worse when hair loss occurs at a young age or when the area of hair loss increases. Alopecia areata often gets better on its own when the size of the lesion is small. If the area of the lesion is large or the hair falls out a lot, treatment is recommended.
Treatment includes topical application of steroids and intralesional injections. Applying a solution of minoxidil may also help with treatment. If hair loss is rapid and widespread, steroids are given by mouth.
Fall hair loss
The reason hair loss gets worse in the fall is that the hair, which has suffered from strong sunlight and excessive scalp secretions during the summer, loses a lot over time. Also, it can be caused by a temporary increase in the secretion of male hormones that affect hair loss in the fall. Testosterone interferes with the generation of energy required for hair growth and development, making the hair root into a state of lack of energy. Inhibits the growth of hair, especially on the forehead and the crown. This type of hair loss is commonly referred to as male pattern baldness. Baldness is known as heredity, and strictly speaking, the constitution that is sensitive to male hormones is inherited.
The most important way to prevent hair loss in autumn is to avoid stress, get enough rest and sleep, and eat a balanced diet. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the health of the scalp, as the cool and dry autumn weather makes the scalp dry and keratin is easy to accumulate. If you have oily hair and dandruff, it is important to keep your hair clean by washing your hair daily with lukewarm water to remove waste products, fat and germs.
Diagnosis
Self-diagnosis of alopecia is as follows.
Pulling hair lightly
This is a method of holding 8 to 10 hairs with your fingers and pulling them lightly. Normal hair usually only loses 1 or 2 hairs. If you fall out of 4 or more, it is most likely alopecia.
Hair loss per day
A normal person loses about 50 to 60 hairs per day. If you lose more than 100 hairs per day, you may have alopecia. In order to accurately measure the amount of hair falling out in a day, collect the hair that has been lost for 3 to 4 days (hair that has fallen while washing, combing, pillows, etc.) every day and putting it in each bag and counting the number of hairs. Hair that falls out when washing or combing your hair should also be included.
Hair care
Check whether you frequently do heavy hair care, perms, dyes and bleaches, and rinses thoroughly after shampooing.
Family history
For androgenetic baldness, check to see if a parent or close relative is bald.
Taking any medications
Check to see if you are taking any medications, such as oral contraceptives, heparin, coumarin, or vitamin A or derivatives thereof.
Scalp skin disease
Check for possible skin conditions on your scalp, such as dandruff, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis.
Other
Check for severe mental stress, fatigue, lack of sleep, rapid dieting and weight loss, and thyroid disease.
Cure
It is important to accurately diagnose alopecia and treat it appropriately. There are no special foods that are good for preventing hair loss. There is no scientific evidence that these foods can cure hair loss. However, a well-balanced diet that contains a variety of nutrients can help.
A study in the United States found that baldness was significantly associated with heart disease, such as atherosclerosis. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid excessive consumption of animal fats. While massaging the scalp to improve blood flow to the scalp can be helpful, this is not absolute. Excessive amounts can actually promote hair loss.
Caution
- Excessive grooming when hair is wet can cause hair damage.
- Damage to the hair such as frequent perm, dyeing, or bleaching should be avoided as much as possible.
- Proper shampooing and rinsing will help prevent hair loss. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- If you have severe dandruff or severe inflammation due to seborrheic dermatitis, it is recommended to see a dermatologist.
- Be careful as hair loss can be severe due to severe mental and physical stress, fatigue, lack of sleep, alcohol, tobacco, unbalanced diet, rapid diet and weight loss, surgery, anemia, and thyroid disease.
