What should the patient know before having facelift surgery?

The procedure itself takes two to five hours, depending on the extent, and is performed either under local anaesthetic, twilight sleep or general anesthesia. The incision usually runs behind the ears and / or along the hairline. According to current medical standards, the treating surgeon’s focus is not exclusively on tightening the upper layer of skin, but primarily on the deeper structures, which consist of muscles, connective tissue and fat. This so-called SMAS is released and can now be stretched in different directions and thus tightened. This is followed by the smoothing of the overlying skin layer. After the excess skin caused by the tightening has been removed, the edges of the skin are finally sewn up as tension-free as possible. Important: The extent of the intervention ultimately determines how invasive the operation is.

After the procedure, the patient should spend at least one night in hospital or at least under medical supervision. Severe pain should not occur. The first follow-up check takes place i. i.e. Usually on the day after the operation, further appointments will be discussed with the surgeon. In the first few days after the facelift, there will be swelling and bruising, so that the ability to socialize will only be fully restored after about two weeks, at which point the stitches will also be removed. A recovery phase of about two weeks should therefore be scheduled. In the first few weeks after the procedure, patients should avoid sporting activities, visits to the sauna and direct sunlight. In order for scars to heal, the patient should ensure a high level of sun protection in the facial area in the following months and, if necessary, discuss the scar aftercare with the doctor.

“For the first night, the patient is given a large turban bandage to close the open wounds well and keep them together. Patients who have been treated under local anesthesia are usually able to socialize again after three to four days. There are However, there are people who tend to swell. Then it can happen that a patient is absent for about 14 days. Almost every patient gets bruises. However, these can be covered with make-up very well. Incidentally, this can be done directly on the first day after the operation Washing your hair is also no problem. However, you should take it slow with sport at first. We recommend lying quietly in bed or on the couch, raising your upper body and relaxing.”

“The first follow-up appointment is the day after the operation. It is checked whether there was postoperative bleeding or whether other treatment steps are necessary. A new bandage is no longer applied at the follow-up appointment. Further follow-up appointments depend on the individual wishes of the patient. As a rule, the patient comes to the practice after a week and after 14 days for the stitches to be removed.”

The right doctor for a facelift

If you want to undergo a facelift, you should exercise care when choosing your doctor, because doctors from a wide variety of disciplines and experience levels offer the procedure. There is no uniform regulation and training specifically for facelifts. Ideally, patients find “their” doctor through a personal recommendation from their own environment, but there are also indicators that anyone can use for orientation without a recommendation. The specialist title “Specialist in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery” can be a good first indication. This certifies at least six years of training in plastic surgery. In addition, a doctor should also have sufficient practical experience in the field of facelift surgery, because not every trained “specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery” automatically has this – on the contrary: personal initiative in further training in this field is an absolutely decisive criterion. Therefore, the question of interventions that have already been carried out is quite legitimate. It is also worth having the potential surgeon show and explain before and after photos of patients whose initial findings were similar to your own. Because only a competent doctor who is familiar with the details of facelift surgery has sufficient experience to select the most suitable treatment method for each patient.

The preliminary talk is also a further criterion: Does the surgeon take enough time? Does he ask about your personal history, explain the method and procedure of a facelift based on the individual indication and also discuss the risks in detail? How is the atmosphere and the behavior of the practice staff? Even if the doctor in question meets all previous criteria: Finally, the personal component should decide the choice of doctor. After all, what good is training and experience if your gut feeling isn’t right?
