Overview

A face lift (wrinkle removal) is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the shape of the face and make it look younger. This procedure can reduce sagging skin or skin folds on the cheeks or jawbones, as well as treat any other changes in the shape of your face that occur with age.

During a facelift procedure, folds of skin are pulled on each side of your face, and the tissues under the skin are surgically modified to redefine the face for a more youthful appearance. Before closing the skin folds with stitches, the excess skin is removed.

A neck lift (neck lift) is often performed as part of a facelift to reduce fatty deposits and sagging skin in the neck.

A facelift will not reduce fine folds or wrinkles in your skin or repair damage caused by sun exposure. Other cosmetic procedures can help improve the appearance or quality of the skin itself.

Why is this being done

As you get older, the appearance and shape of your face changes due to the natural changes associated with age. The skin becomes less elastic and loosened, and fat deposits decrease in some areas of the face and increase in others. Age-related changes in the face that can be reduced with a facelift include:

  • The saggy look of the cheeks
  • Excess skin at the bottom of the jaw line
  • Deepening of the skin folds from the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth
  • Sagging skin and excess fat in the neck (if the procedure includes a neck lift)

A face-lift isn’t a treatment for superficial wrinkles, sun damage, wrinkles around the nose or upper lip, or uneven skin tone.

Risks

Face-lift surgery can cause complications. Some can be managed with appropriate care, medication, or surgical correction. Long-term or permanent complications, although rare, can cause significant changes in appearance. Risks include:

  • Hematoma; A collection of blood (hematoma) under the skin that causes swelling and pressure is the most common complication of face-lift surgery. A hematoma collection, which usually occurs within 24 hours of surgery, is treated promptly with surgery to prevent damage to the skin and other tissues.
  • Scarring; Incision scars from a facelift are permanent, but are usually hidden by the hairline and the natural contours of the face and ears. In rare cases, the incisions can lead to red, raised scars. Corticosteroid injections or other treatments may be used to improve the appearance of scars.
  • Nerve injury; Nerve injury, although rare, can temporarily or permanently affect the nerves that control sensation or muscles. Temporary paralysis of a specific muscle, resulting in an asymmetric facial appearance or expression, or temporary loss of sensation, may last from a few months to a year. Surgical interventions may provide some improvement.
  • Hair loss; You may experience temporary or permanent hair loss near the incision sites. Permanent hair loss can be treated with a surgical procedure to transplant the skin with hair follicles.
  • Skin loss in rare cases, a face-lift can cut off the blood supply to facial tissues. This may result in a loss of skin (scaring). Scaling is treated with medication, proper wound care, and, if necessary, an operation to reduce scarring.

Like any other type of major surgery, a face-lift carries a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Certain medical conditions or lifestyle habits may also increase the risk of complications. The following factors may present a significant risk or lead to an unfavorable outcome, and your doctor may advise against a face-lift.
