Detailed information about Sliding Genioplasty

Sliding genioplasty is more common than chin augmentation because it does not involve placing foreign material into your body. Sliding genioplasty also allows for more precise results in cases where there needs to be significant movement of the chin.

Sliding Genioplasty

Genioplasty uses surgical techniques to move the chin bone, which is known as the mandible. The bone can be moved both vertically and horizontally to correct problems of length, height, or protrusion.

There are two types of genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin augmentation.

Chin augmentation involves placing an implant into the area below your chin. This type of procedure is mostly used for people with very short chins.

Sliding genioplasty is more common than chin augmentation because it does not involve placing foreign material into your body. Sliding genioplasty also allows for more precise results in cases where there needs to be significant movement of the chin.

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases the projection of the chin by positioning a synthetic implant or moving the chin bone forward. An implant is used to add volume and structure.

If an implant is not enough, a sliding genioplasty may be recommended. In this surgical procedure, a surgeon uses a saw to cut the chin bone away from the rest of the jaw and move it to correct a chin deficiency. This is also known as bony genioplasty. This type of genioplasty is recommended for people with severe retrogenesis or for people whose chin is too far back in relation to the rest of their face. It can also help correct chins that are too far forward and too long.

The choice between using an implant or performing a sliding genioplasty depends on the proportions of your face and your goals for surgery. A surgeon will consider your age, gender, and ethnicity before suggesting one over the other.

Risks Of Sliding Genioplasty

There are several risks associated with sliding genioplasty. Some common risks include:

Redness, swelling, bruising, numbness, or pain at incision site that may persist up to one year after surgery

  • Nerve damage
  • Infection

Genioplasty is a type of chin surgery that can help make the chin more prominent or less prominent. It can also help correct a cleft lip and chin.

In this procedure, the surgeon inserts an implant made out of artificial material into the chin to either increase or decrease its prominence. This procedure usually isn’t used to correct severe retrogenesis or serious deformities, but it can be used to correct less dramatic problems.
