Surface anesthesia
Depending on the treatment chosen, four different types of local anesthesia are distinguished. Topical anesthesia – for example with a spray – is used to numb the mucous membrane on the surface in order to reduce the pain of the subsequent injection, especially in children.
Infiltration anesthesia
Infiltration anesthesia (terminal anesthesia) is used to eliminate pain in the vicinity of the puncture site. The anesthetic solution can penetrate the bone and numb the teeth. However, this only works in areas where the bone layer is not too thick. This includes the entire upper jaw and the front tooth area of the lower jaw.
Block anesthesia
If the posterior region of the lower jaw or a larger area is to be anaesthetized, nerve block anesthesia is used. Here the anesthetic is injected near the nerve that supplies the corresponding area of the jaw. As the effect begins, the lower lip and often the half of the tongue on the corresponding side becomes numb.
Intraligamentary anesthesia
With intraligamentary anesthesia, a very thin needle and a special syringe are used to inject directly between the tooth and its bony compartment. This can become necessary if complete freedom from pain cannot be achieved with types of anesthesia. There are also a number of procedures that are not yet very well known or that are only offered by specialists.
Analgesic sedation
With this form of anesthesia, the patient remains conscious, but still does not feel any pain. Analgosedation switches off the pain by means of an injection in the arm. The patient reacts to physical stimuli and the address of the therapist, although he is in a sleep-like state. Since analgosedation does not prevent the pain, but only influences the sensation, local anesthesia is usually unavoidable. After such treatment, as under hypnosis, the patient has no unpleasant memory of the treatment.
Mind machines
A primarily relaxing effect comes from the so-called mind machines. These are electronically controlled programs that use LED glasses to create a hypnoid state. In many cases, mind machines can replace hypnosis during treatment. Their use is usually not associated with any additional costs.
Hypnosis
Dental treatment under hypnosis is becoming increasingly popular, especially among patients who are afraid of dental treatment. According to the definition of the German Society for Dental Hypnosis (DGZH), at least pain-reducing dental treatment is possible in almost all cases with this method. It should be applicable to about 90 percent of the population. However, since it can only produce complete freedom from pain in a deep trance and only in about 10 percent of patients, combined treatment with sedatives is recommended in the other cases. Trance or hypnosis is the mental influencing of a mental or physical state.
It can be done by self-hypnosis or auto-hypnosis as well as external hypnosis by a so-called hypnotist from outside. It shuts down the rational part of the brain, shutting out anything that is uncomfortable and promoting recovery and an accelerated healing process. Before the dental treatment under hypnosis, there are usually 2 to 3 teaching hypnosis sessions, in which the deepening into the trance is practiced. The success of hypnosis depends to a large extent on the cooperation of the patient and can theoretically be used on anyone who is willing to allow it.
General anesthetic
In addition to local anesthesia, the injection of which with the help of the smallest needles is hardly noticeable, some patients who are interested in quick dental treatment require general anesthesia. Before a planned anesthetic treatment, the necessary preliminary examinations are carried out by a specialist in anaesthesia. Since participation in road traffic is prohibited after the anesthetic, you should ensure that you are accompanied or provided with a vehicle. The following day the body should be allowed to rest.
