Dental health before and during pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very special and emotional moment in a woman’s life! During this delicate period, many emotional and physical changes take place, for which the woman is not fully prepared. Then you need to pay more attention to oral (dental) health.

Very often, pregnancy draws the full attention of the expectant mother to the fetus and the development of the little man growing in her womb. Numerous blood tests, ultrasounds, fetal morphology, tone monitoring, etc., are a natural part of monitoring pregnancy.

The truth is that during this period the female body is under extreme stress. The female sex hormones progesterone and estrogen double and triple, which leads to changes in the dental health of the expectant mother.

The most common complaints are related to:

  • increased sensitivity of the teeth;
  • easy bleeding gums;
  • non-localized, shooting, atypical pain;
  • swelling.

Modern dentistry is very advanced. New treatments, as well as the availability of safe painkillers, allow dentists to treat pregnant women even in advanced pregnancy without risk to their health or that of the baby.

BEFORE AND DURING PREGNANCY

As already mentioned during pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many changes. One of them is that all the nutrients that the mother takes are directed and assimilated with priority by the fetus. The fetus receives these nutrients mainly through the mother’s diet.

That is why our first advice as dental specialists is:

  • EAT FULLY AND BET ON SEASONAL FOOD.

The food you eat is a major source of nutrients for you and your baby, they ensure his growth as well as your health. Every woman gains weight during her pregnancy. Healthy weight gain is directly related to healthy eating. Bet on foods rich in vitamins and minerals.

  • Folate: dark green leafy vegetables and fortified cereals, such as whole wheat bread, flour, pasta, rice (foods rich in folate);
  • Vitamin A: carrots, sweet potatoes, dark or yellow vegetables;
  • B vitamins: lean meats – pork, beef, chicken;
  • Vitamin C: vegetables and fruits such as broccoli, green and red peppers, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, lemon, cabbage, pineapple, strawberries, citrus fruits;
  • Iron: liver, lean red meat, eggs and chicken, as well as green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, horseradish leaves and dried fruits;
  • Iodine: dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), seaweed, fish, meat and eggs.
  • Calcium: dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), fish, green leafy vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, green leaves of turnips and horseradish).

Did you know that teeth are the only bone in the human body that is visible to the naked eye? And as we know, calcium contributes to a healthy bone system.

In order to build a good skeletal system of the baby, the calcium that the mother receives is absorbed through the placenta by the little man. This is a prerequisite that even if you had healthy teeth before you became pregnant, your oral health would deteriorate during pregnancy, even if you lost a tooth. Eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals to strengthen teeth and tissues around them.

The best way to reduce calories is to limit foods that contain added sugars or fats, such as desserts, fried foods, whole milk and carbonated beverages in your diet. Choose foods that are low-fat, non-fat, unsweetened or without added sugar, seasonal.

Bet on fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy and meat products, if possible with an origin for which you are sure that no pesticides, nitrates, E’s, etc. are used. “Extras”.
