Although teeth aren’t meant to be completely white naturally, many Canadians want a brighter smile. To meet this desire, a wide range of whitening products have been made available to consumers. The most popular method is the use of a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These active ingredients are only available in concentrations high enough to be effective with the supervision of a dentist or other dental professional.

Crowns

A crown (also called a “cap”) can be used to cover the damaged part of your tooth – when it hasn’t fallen out – and protect it from further damage. Crowns are not usually recommended for people under age 18 because the jaw and teeth are still growing and developing. Your dentist will recommend what type of crown is best for you, depending on the kind of damage and where the tooth is located in your mouth.

Dental implants

Implants are used to replace missing roots and hold replacement teeth in place. They are surgically placed in your jaw bone. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth without affecting neighboring teeth. If you lose all your teeth.

Dental implants are increasingly becoming the standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Unlike older approaches, such as dentures and bridges, dental implants are permanent because they are implanted directly into your jawbone.

Tooth loss is a common occurrence in adults. According to Statistics Canada, about 10% of Canadians in their 40s have lost all their teeth, and this increases to nearly 25% of those in their 60s, and more than 50% of those in their 70s.

The bottom line? If you’re missing some teeth, you should seriously consider replacing them with dental implants. Here’s why:

Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth

Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth – an especially important benefit when eating and speaking. This secure fit helps the dentures and bridges – as well as individual crowns placed over implants – feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

For some people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the space

If you decide to use a teeth-whitening product, talk to your dentist first.

He or she can determine the cause of your discolouration and recommend the best course of treatment to achieve your desired results.

You may be advised against teeth whitening if you have active tooth decay, gum disease, tooth sensitivity or other dental issues. Teeth whitening isn’t effective in removing stains caused by tetracycline antibiotics taken during childhood, which can discolour teeth permanently.

Teeth-whitening products are generally safe when used as directed. However, they can irritate the gums and cause tooth sensitivity if used too frequently or improperly.
