Creatine and hair loss

Creatine monohydrate is often used by athletes as a supplement that affects how muscles use energy. The use of creatine in supplement form is associated with both positive and negative side effects that depend on the amount taken and the duration of consumption. Hair loss is associated with high levels of creatine.

Creatine is a natural amino acid (a constituent of proteins). Found in meat and fish but also produced by the human body in the liver, pancreas and kidneys. Creatine is responsible for proper bodily functions at the muscular and cellular levels. According to the University of Maryland, creatine helps improve athletic performance. As in the treatment of conditions such as heart disease, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

But regardless of its benefits, new information shows that it has a negative effect on hair growth. And it can even cause hair loss. Studies in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine have shown that creatine shows the levels of dihydrotestosterone in your body. DHT is the leading cause of hair loss. By binding to hair follicle receptors, it signals that interfere with the normal hair growth cycle.

However, for the negative effects on your health and your hair, the amount of creatine you take is significant. And the duration of use. Most studies do not show significant side effects from creatine if you have not taken it for more than 6 months. Creatine from natural sources is considered to help maintain the level without negative side effects.
