Chin implant – Genioplasty
A chin implant, also called chin augmentation or genioplasty, is a cosmetic procedure used to enhance the chin to give the face a more balanced appearance. Chin reduction, or mentoplasty, is another type of chin surgery to balance the face. A chin implant is often recommended by cosmetic surgeons when the patient also has nose surgery, cosmetic nose surgery.
Chin enlargement should only be considered by adults as the bones of the face will change and change with age. A small, sagging or weak chin is the primary reason for getting a chin implant. Chin augmentation can also create a more defined jaw line and neck, and some choose to receive facial liposuction at the same time to remove excess fat from the neck. The chin implant may be made of silicon or other synthetic materials attached to the bone with sutures or titanium screws; the doctor may also choose to move the chin bone forward without placing an implant at all. Only your plastic surgeon can tell you the best course of action.
To insert the implant, make a small incision in one of two places: under the lower lip inside the mouth or under the chin in an invisible area. The scar is very small and usually not detectable. The size of the chin implant is carefully determined to give your face the most natural look. Most chin augmentation surgeries take from half an hour to an hour and the patient is usually able to go home shortly after.
As with any surgery, there are inherent risks, but complications from chin augmentation are relatively uncommon. There is the rare possibility of a blood clot or a reaction to the anesthesia, as with any surgery. If you have any particular concerns, or have ever had problems with anesthesia, sedation, or other potential problems, be sure to discuss them with your surgeon beforehand. An infection is also possible, which can generally be treated with antibiotics.
After the operation, the patient gets some swelling, soreness and discoloration of the skin. A bandage will likely be wrapped around the top of the head and under the chin, which can be removed the next day. The stitches can generally be removed within a week, at which time normal activities such as exercise can be resumed. It is advisable for the patient to sleep on his back for the first week or a few weeks as the implant could potentially change and then need to be surgically repaired. It can take months before the swelling completely disappears, so be patient. Follow all instructions after the operation carefully. Once the chin implant is healed, it cannot be detected.
Chin Implants: Who They Are For
People who are good candidates for chin implants typically have a recessed chin or a “weak” chin. This can be the result of heredity, aging, an accident or other factors. The procedure can help those who feel their facial features are out of proportion because their nose appears too large compared to their chin. Typically, people aged 18 and up are good candidates for this procedure. Good health and realistic expectations are important factors in determining if someone is a good candidate for any cosmetic surgery.
A computer imaging program can help determine if you would be a good candidate for this procedure and can help you understand what your new appearance might look like after surgery.
